MoonlightWeb v0.4.1 — a sharper upscaler, a keyboard for every window

The release that makes MoonlightWeb's own upscaler the default on every device, lets a phone's keyboard type into any window of the PC, and brings a crashed stream back on its own. MoonlightWeb streams your gaming PC to any device with a browser — you install one app on the gaming PC, which captures and encodes that machine itself; every other device just opens a URL.

Picture

  • MoonlightWeb's upscaler is the default — with Video Enhancement on, every device now runs it: text as sharp as FSR1's, without halos, in about half of FSR1's time. Compare it with FSR1, NIS and SGSR1 on your own device in the interactive comparator. Other programs can use it too: it ships under the MIT License in the repository's mwsr/ folder.
  • A new "Auto" codec, now the default — HEVC as before, and AV1 when HEVC can't do the job, for HDR with the enhancer on. A browser that can't really play HEVC, like Firefox on some PCs, gets H.264 straight away from its second stream.
  • HDR fixes — an AV1 HDR stream no longer stays black at the start in Chrome on Windows, no longer turns yellow-green on a Mac, and fine bright detail keeps its light when a 4K HDR stream is shown on a smaller screen.

Keyboard

  • A phone's keyboard types into every window — with the PC's real keys, so cmd, PowerShell and administrator windows receive it too.
  • Your own layout on the desktop, key positions in games — accents and a Mac's Option combinations type as on your keyboard, WASD stays under your fingers in games, and Num Lock follows your keyboard's.
  • Invited players and administrator windows — closed to them by default; one setting opens them, explained in the wiki.
  • A held key is left to the host to repeat, as in moonlight-qt.
  • AltGr symbols no longer open menus — typing @, # or { on a French Windows keyboard no longer pops up Notepad's menu letters.

Phones and tablets

  • A busy phone keeps its full frame rate, the stats fit a phone's screen, pasting your PIN works again, and zooming in stays sharp on iPhone and iPad.

Displays and mouse

  • The PC's other screens can go dark during a stream — a new admin option of the native host, off by default, for streams of its virtual display; they come back when the stream ends.
  • "Match my screen" gives a display its own mode back, and the resolution and frame rate you pick are kept.
  • A PC with no mouse plugged in shows its pointer, and in gaming mode the pointer appears at once, right on its point.

Reliability and network

  • A crashed stream comes back on its own — the picture dims under "Reconnecting…" and the stream restarts within seconds; a third crash in five minutes ends it.
  • Fewer freezes in Chrome, and shorter ones on 5G.
  • Works on networks that block UDP — on a school, office or hotel Wi-Fi, the browser now reaches your PC over TCP, still directly.
  • No more hourly drop-outs behind some routers, and your link is reachable again sooner after a cut or a sleep.
  • Share links use your own domain when you reach your PC through it.
  • App cards open again when the host runs as a Windows service.

Under the hood

  • A PC that serves a modified interface is not opened — the browser checks what the PC sends against the interface published for its release; every official release since 0.3.0 passes.
  • The ARM64 installer no longer offers the virtual display, and an update no longer installs one you skipped.

Downloads

Install on the gaming PC only. The quickest route on macOS and Linux is the one-liner curl -fsSL https://moonlightweb.top/install.sh | bash — it also sets up the repository, so updates come with the system:

Platform Asset
Windows x64 MoonlightWeb-installer-0.4.1-win-x64.exe
Windows ARM64 MoonlightWeb-installer-0.4.1-win-arm64.exe
macOS (Apple Silicon) moonlightweb-0.4.1-macos-arm64.pkg
Linux (Debian/Ubuntu/Mint) moonlightweb-0.4.1-linux-x64.deb
Linux (Fedora/RHEL/openSUSE) moonlightweb-0.4.1-linux-x64.rpm
Linux (portable) moonlightweb-0.4.1-x86_64.AppImage

Prefer a container? docker pull ghcr.io/linckosz/moonlight-web:0.4.1 (host networking). Playing from a phone, tablet or TV? Nothing to download — just open your server's URL in the browser.

Requirements

  • A gaming PC running Windows, Linux or macOS — it streams itself; Sunshine is optional, and only if you want to pair a different machine.
  • A modern browser on the client device (Chrome/Edge recommended for full codec, HDR and WebGPU support; Chrome or Edge on a computer to send a wheel or radio as itself).
  • On Linux, a distribution no older than Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 or Fedora 36 — Qt and OpenSSL are bundled, the system C runtime never can be.
