Frodhes 0.9.8 adds a 3-band EQ and faster knobs on the FM-1, cleaner effects, and the first release of Frodhes for the Ableton Move.
Download: frodhes.fwsc below (the same file as frodhes-0.9.8.fwsc; the newest is always at https://github.com/leonardoMirabal/frodhes/releases/latest/download/frodhes.fwsc). Try it first in your browser: https://leonardomirabal.github.io/frodhes/
Install
FM-1: download frodhes.fwsc below. Install it from the emulator page (Chrome or Edge, Install on your FM-1 or SMK-37), or from a terminal:
pip install mido python-rtmidi
python3 tools/fm1_install.py frodhes.fwscYour settings, presets and pattern are kept. If anything goes wrong, switch the FM-1 off, hold OCT− and switch it on: that is the USB rescue, and you can install again from there.
Move: you need Schwung on the Move. Install Frodhes with Schwung Manager in a web browser: Install Custom Module > From GitHub URL, leonardoMirabal/frodhes. Or download frodhes-module.tar.gz below and use From Tarball. Details: the Move manual.
SMK-37 Pro, SMK-37 Elite, MKE-P37: frodhes-smk37-pro.fwsc, frodhes-smk37-elite.fwsc and frodhes-mke-p37.fwsc below. Read SMK37.md first.
New in 0.9.8
- EQ page, between COMPRESSOR and DRIVE: a LOW shelf at 120 Hz, a MID band you can move from 200 Hz to 5 kHz
(MID FREQ), and a HIGH shelf at 5 kHz, each ±15 dB. It sits before the drive, so it also changes how the drive
breaks up. It is saved in presets. Presets and settings from earlier versions load with it flat, and flat it
leaves the sound untouched. Over MIDI: CC 34-37. - The knobs speed up when you turn them fast (#25). A
quick turn moves an amount up to 8 steps per click, so one turn covers the whole range. A slow turn still moves
one step per click. Choices, note values and short ranges always move one step. - The emulator page installs on the SMK-37 Pro, SMK-37 Elite and MKE-P37 too. It
finds the model and picks its file, and an install that was cut off can be resumed. - VIBES and MARIMBA start at most 10 notes at the same instant. Any more (a large MIDI chord, a busy sequencer step)
start 5.8 ms later, in order. - Frodhes on the Move: Frodhes now runs on the Ableton Move as a sound generator in Schwung.
- All six instruments and every effect, with 16 voices and the higher-quality version of each instrument.
- The reverb at the full sample rate: its tails keep their top octave.
- Frodhes' own screen: the eight knobs as eight cards, a page at a time, in the FM-1's order. Touch or turn a
knob to see its card large. A double tap on a knob sets it back to its default. The knob lights show the values. - The arrows: Left turns the effects off or on (the compressor stays on), Right turns the sustain on or off. A
sustain pedal on CC 64 works as on the FM-1. - Presets: F01-F19 are the FM-1's, F20-F57 are 38 more for the Move, and 16 user slots. SAVE TO USER, in the
list under the jog wheel, saves your sound. - The arpeggiator, with HOLD. It follows the Move's tempo and transport, as do all synced rates. The Move's
sequencer and scales play Frodhes. - Pressure mappings: the pads' pressure can drive a control through its CC number. Off by default.
- Up to four Frodhes at once, one per track, each with its own sound. Three play without dropouts. With four,
very heavy playing with every effect on can drop audio. - To play at every velocity, turn the Move's Full Velocity setting off. Keep Schwung's slot volume at 100 %.
Changes
- Drive: FDRV and KHLON are cleaner when driven hard on high notes, with far less harsh, out-of-tune edge.
- Touch wah: far less noise on soft notes, less grit on loud ones, and the sweep no longer flickers on a held
note. - Chorus: cleaner on high notes, and turning DEPTH quickly no longer clicks.
- Delay ANA and TAPE: cleaner echoes, and each repeat keeps more of its top.
- Filter with its LFO, and the phaser: smoother sweeps, without the faint grain of the fast settings.
- LEVEL: presets turned down or up with LEVEL keep a clean, quiet tail.
- The end of every note fades smoothly to silence instead of stopping with a short cut.
Fixed
- VIBES and MARIMBA: a released note could keep its voice for up to 15 s after it had faded, which changed which
notes were cut off next. A released note now always ends once it has died away. - DELAY with the chorus, the phaser or the pan on: the echoes' level jumped by up to 3 dB from one moment to the
next. Present since 0.9.3. - Drive (KHLON and FDRV): after a panic, or once every note had died away, a faint constant level could stay, and the
tremolo turned it into a soft pulse. The drive now returns to true silence. - FDRV: the last seconds of a held note had a faint, coarse buzz, mostly heard over USB audio.
- The emulator page's installer offered nothing that would install on an SMK-37 running Frodhes
(#23).
