Playden for PS5 0.8.0

Games shared by your Steam family now show in your Library, downloads can use the fastest Steam server, and leftover PS5 titles can be deleted from Storage. Saved sign-ins no longer expire about a day after a QR sign-in, and covers stay available offline. Same runtime kit as 0.7.0 (0.13).

Warning

Alpha software. Playden signs in to your real Steam account and reads and writes your Steam Cloud saves. Read Before you use it first.

Downloads

File What it is
playden-ps5-0.8.0.zip The Playden app (the FAKE77031 folder), the console tools (tools/), the README, the compatibility list and the license files.
playden-kit-0.13.zip Runtime kit 0.13, the same as in 0.7.0, 0.7.1 and 0.7.2. Playden downloads it by itself; you need this file only to install the kit by hand.
playden-update.json Used by Playden to update itself and to find its kit. You don't need to download it.

Updating from 0.7.2, 0.7.1, 0.7.0, 0.8.0-beta.1 or a 0.7.1 beta: Playden offers the update the next time it starts, or from Settings › Updates › Check now (39 MB, app only). Your sign-in, games, saves and Game settings are kept.

Updating from 0.6.0: Playden offers the update the next time it starts, or from Settings › About › Playden updates › Check now. It updates the app and, if it isn't installed yet, kit 0.13. Make sure console storage has at least 8 GB free first (PS5 Settings › Storage).

Updating from 0.5.0 or older: update to 0.6.0 first (see its notes), then let Playden update itself to 0.8.0.

New install: unzip playden-ps5-0.8.0.zip into a folder of its own and copy the FAKE77031 folder to /data/homebrew/ (see the README). On its first start Playden offers to download the runtime kit; you can sign in while it downloads.

What's new

  • Steam Families. Games another member of your Steam family shares with you now show in the Library with a "Family" badge and install like your own. When you also own a game, your own license is used. Sort and filters › Family sharing hides them (on by default, like Demos). Playden does not take Steam's one-player-at-a-time lock for a shared game. (#9, #80)

  • Faster downloads: choose the download server. Settings › Downloads › Download server:

    • Fastest tests the Steam servers at the start of each download of 200 MB or more, on the game's own files, and uses the fastest one. It tests again if that server slows down, and remembers the winner for the next games in the Queue.
    • Steam default (still the default) uses the server Steam lists first, as before.
    • Or choose a server yourself. Test servers measures each one.

The Queue shows which server a download comes from. (#97, #214)

  • Delete leftover PS5 titles. Settings › Storage › Leftover PS5 titles lists Playden titles that no game uses any more, with their size. Select them and delete them; their Home tiles go too, and game files and saves are kept. Deletions run through the Queue and pick up again after a restart. (#171)

  • Covers are cached on the console, so the Library shows them offline and after a restart. A game without a portrait cover gets its Steam banner, framed to fit. (#162)

  • About names the runtime kit in use and its version, and says which kit this version expects if a different one is installed.

Fixed

  • Signed out about a day after signing in. After a QR sign-in, the first renewal of Steam access sent the wrong request, Steam refused it, and Playden signed out. Access is now renewed through the Steam connection, as the Steam client does.
  • Playden stopped working after a recursive chmod 777 over FTP on /data/playden: it refused to start, refused the runtime kit, or every game's Prepare and Play failed. Playden now gives its own files back the modes it needs, at startup and before Prepare and Play. Please don't change permissions inside /data/playden.
  • Installing a new build over an updated Playden failed with "target file is not writable" in the web file manager or over FTP. Self-update now leaves the app files writable.
  • Fallout 2 failed to install with "Downloaded content failed verification" before anything downloaded. Its two depots hold master.dat as an empty folder and as the game file. The file now wins, as on Steam; other games with the same kind of clash install too.
  • Uninstalling showed "Play" with a growing percentage. The game page now shows "Uninstalling" with progress, or "Uninstall queued". (#165)
  • A failed cover download no longer replaces a good cover with a blank or the wrong image.

Known issues

  • Online play doesn't work. Games find no servers or say Steam is offline (#115). An experimental Online mode is in test builds.
  • Games that start another program don't start, such as launchers, pre-launchers and games whose interface is drawn by a helper program (#52).
  • Some Direct3D 12 games say the GPU is not supported, even with Direct3D 12 = vkd3d-proton (#118).
  • Some games stop at start before drawing a frame (#117), or because of unaligned shared sections in their program (#116).
  • VRR at 120 Hz: for 120 Hz output, turn off the PS5's VRR › Apply to Unsupported Games (#98).

Thanks
