Playden for PS5 0.11.0-beta.1

pre-releaseone hour ago

Games can now run at 120 Hz on a VRR display, with no need for "Apply to Unsupported Games". New runtime kit 0.20 keeps 120 Hz under VRR and fixes Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and the pointer in small display modes such as Heroes III. Side menus also go round from the last row to the top.

Warning

Beta of alpha software. Betas can have new bugs. Playden signs in to your real Steam account and reads and writes your Steam Cloud saves. Read Before you use it first.

Downloads

File What it is
playden-ps5-0.11.0-beta.1.zip The Playden app (the FAKE77031 folder), the console tools (tools/), the README, the compatibility list and the license files.
playden-kit-0.20.zip Runtime kit 0.20. Playden downloads it by itself; you need this file only to install the kit by hand.
playden-update.json Used by Playden to update itself and to find its kit. You don't need to download it.

Getting the beta (from 0.7.0 or newer): turn on Settings › Updates › Beta updates, then Check now. Playden updates the app and runtime kit 0.20 (433 MB). Make sure console storage has at least 8 GB free first (PS5 Settings › Storage). Your sign-in, games, saves and Game settings are kept.

After the update: Playden asks once whether to update your games to the new runtime kit. This takes about 30 seconds per game and downloads nothing from Steam. If you choose Later, they stay on the Runtimes tab of Manage installed games, and Play updates a game's runtime kit first. A game needs this update to get VRR support. Until then, games keep running on their old kit from PS5 Home.

Updating from 0.6.0 or older: update to 0.8.0 first (see its notes), then turn on Beta updates.

New install: unzip playden-ps5-0.11.0-beta.1.zip into a folder of its own and copy the FAKE77031 folder to /data/homebrew/ (see the README). On its first start Playden offers to download the runtime kit; you can sign in while it downloads.

What's new

  • 120 Hz on a VRR display. With VRR on, games used to drop to 60 Hz. Games updated to runtime kit 0.20 tell the PS5 they support VRR, so the display follows the game at up to 120 Hz without "Apply to Unsupported Games". (#98)
  • Side menus go round. Down on the last row of a side menu goes to the top row, as Up on the top row already went to the last. A held D-pad, stick or arrow key stops at the end first, so it never skips past it.
  • 18 more games in the compatibility list, from your test reports. FINAL FANTASY VIII - REMASTERED now works with Start through a launcher.

New in runtime kit 0.20 (prospero-win)

  • 120 Hz stays on under VRR. The graphics driver no longer drops to 60 Hz when VRR slows the display's idle refresh. (#98)
  • Spider-Man: Web of Shadows reaches its menu instead of crashing after Press Start. (#580)
  • The pointer reaches the right edge in games that set a display mode smaller than the screen, such as Heroes III at 800x600. (#436)
  • No Recreate needed: games keep their Windows setup.

Games to test

These games should work now, or better than before. Please try them and say how it goes on the linked issue, or open a test report if there's none.

  • Any game on a VRR display: update it to runtime kit 0.20, then check that it reaches 120 Hz with VRR on. (#98)
  • Spider-Man: Web of Shadows: should reach its menu after Press Start and play with its original program, no patched exe needed. (#580)
  • Heroes III and other games with a small display mode: the pointer should reach the right edge. (#436)
  • FINAL FANTASY VIII - REMASTERED: with Start through a launcher and Program set to FFVIII.exe.
