Up to four people can play on one PS5, each with their own DualSense. Games can see a PlayStation controller and show its buttons, and a game's launcher can now start the game. New runtime kit 0.18 brings all three, plus music in Fallout: New Vegas and other games that play it through DirectShow, and a fix for games that started only once.
Warning
Beta of alpha software. Betas can have new bugs. Playden signs in to your real Steam account and reads and writes your Steam Cloud saves. Read Before you use it first.

Getting the beta (from 0.7.0 or newer): turn on Settings › Updates › Beta updates, then Check now. Playden updates the app and runtime kit 0.18 (473 MB). Make sure console storage has at least 8 GB free first (PS5 Settings › Storage). Your sign-in, games, saves and Game settings are kept.
After the update: games set up with an earlier kit show "Kit update available" on their page. Play updates their runtime first, then starts the game. Until then they keep running on their old kit from PS5 Home.
Updating from 0.6.0 or older: update to 0.8.0 first (see its notes), then turn on Beta updates.
New install: unzip playden-ps5-0.10.0-beta.1.zip into a folder of its own and copy the FAKE77031 folder to /data/homebrew/ (see the README). On its first start Playden offers to download the runtime kit; you can sign in while it downloads.
What's new
- Up to four controllers. Each signed-in PS5 user's DualSense is now its own controller, so couch co-op and split screen work. Sign in a PS5 user or a guest for each controller, then start the game. (#221)
- PlayStation controller. Game settings › Controller has a new choice that shows the game a DualShock 4, so games that pick their prompts from the controller show PlayStation buttons. Every player's controller changes with it. Games that only read Xbox controllers see no controller in this mode, so Xbox controller stays the default. The touchpad click is the DualShock 4's touchpad button, and Create is Share. (#159)
- Start a game through its launcher. Game settings › Start through a launcher lets a launcher's Play button start the game, for games that need their launcher. It's off by default, because a game that starts helper programs could restart or close. Launcher controller preset (Mouse by default) applies until the game starts, and holding the touchpad for 2 seconds switches between it and your Controller preset. (#52)
- Run a program once starts the game too. Game actions › Run a program once now uses the same launcher mode, so you can change a launcher's settings and then press its Play. The next Play starts the game as usual.
- Playden offers launcher mode when it's needed. If a game's last run couldn't start a program in its folder, its next start offers "Turn on and play".
- Frame rate for Direct3D 12 games. Game settings › Performance overlay now works for games on vkd3d-proton. They show only the frame rate.
New in runtime kit 0.18 (prospero-win)
- Four controllers through XInput, from @7tg's work upstream (#713, #714), and through the HID gamepad APIs that DirectInput and SDL games use.
- OpenAL Soft 1.25.2 comes with the kit, for games that link to it without shipping it.
- Launchers see the real video memory. Consoles with more than 4 GiB of it no longer report a card with 0 MB, which set off launchers' minimum requirements warnings.
Fixed
- Some games started only once, then failed until the PS5 restarted. The game looked for its files in a fixed sandbox folder, and it now uses the one the console gave it. (#300)
- OpenGL games that close a window and open another stayed on their loading screen, such as Balatro and other LÖVE games. Balatro now reaches its menu and starts a run. (#377)
- Games that play mp3 or WAV music through DirectShow had no music, such as Fallout: New Vegas and Hard Truck 2, and a game that kept retrying closed after a few minutes. (#319)
- Run a program once stopped at start for an OpenGL program in a Direct3D game's folder, such as Hotline Miami's
HotlineGL.exe. The run now uses OpenGL for it. - "The game's settings changed during preparation" stopped a game's setup when you saved a setting, such as a Steam app ID, while it was being set up. Setup now picks up the setting when it reaches that step, and a game already stopped by this finishes on Finish setup without copying its files again.
Games to test
These games should work now, or better than before. Please try them and say how it goes on the linked issue, or open a test report if there isn't one.
- Couch games with two to four players, such as DOOM + DOOM II, Cuphead, Unrailed!, Lost Castle, Blur and Overcooked: each player should have their own controller and rumble. (#221)
- Games that show PlayStation buttons, such as DOOM + DOOM II: should show ✕ and ○ with the new setting. (#159)
- Games with a launcher, such as Batman: Arkham City and Arkham Asylum, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout: New Vegas, The Witcher 3, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Hotline Miami: the launcher's Play should start the game. (#52)
- Buckshot Roulette, Hatred, The Binding of Isaac: Repentance+ and Half-Life: should start more than once. (#300)
- Subnautica 2: should start with default settings. (#418)
- Balatro and other LÖVE games: should reach the menu. (#377)
- Fallout: New Vegas, Hard Truck 2 and other games with DirectShow music: should play it and keep running. (#319)
Known issues
- Online play doesn't work. Games find no servers or say Steam is offline (#115).
- TowerFall Ascension stays on a black screen at start.
- Games whose launcher must keep running don't start, such as FINAL FANTASY VII (2013), and neither do games whose interface is drawn by a helper program (#52).
- A controller that joins while a game runs isn't seen by games that use Windows.Gaming.Input and only look when they start.
- Project Zomboid still stops at start with "Too many open files": it keeps a handle open for every folder of its media (#194).
- Some Direct3D 12 games still don't run (#118):
- Some games stop at start before drawing a frame (#117), or because of unaligned shared sections in their program (#116).
- An update can stop at Restart Playden without saying why if you installed over a self-updated Playden with
tools/console_title_deploy.py --install. Set the app's folders to 0777 in a file manager, then restart again. - VRR at 120 Hz: for 120 Hz output, turn off the PS5's VRR › Apply to Unsupported Games (#98).
