github khasinski/rage-racer-pc 0.6.3-alpha

pre-releaseone month ago

Fixes a red, cloudless sky in the Windows build of 0.6.2-alpha. Windows, Linux and macOS builds are attached once the release workflows finish.

The Windows sky

The colours the sky is drawn from sit in a packed palette: nine slots of three bytes, two bytes behind a flag. Keeping them one-byte aligned relies on an attribute the Windows compiler does not honour, so on that build alone the slots started four bytes in rather than two, and every colour was read two bytes late. Red took the blue channel, green took the padding byte, and the sky came out red with no cloud.

Measured on Windows with a PAL disc: the sky read 83,0,2 where the palette holds 14,30,78. The same build on the same machine now reads 2,67,130.

The layout is asserted at compile time, so a toolchain that moves it again fails the build rather than shipping a wrong colour.

This only ever affected Windows. The macOS and Linux builds of 0.6.2-alpha draw the sky correctly, and so does the classic renderer on Windows, which draws most of its sky from a texture rather than from the palette.

Also since 0.6.2-alpha

  • The split times a replaying ghost draws are anchored to the edges of a widescreen picture, so in time attack the times on the left and the total on the right no longer sit in the middle while their labels move out.
  • The ranking screen in time attack can be opened; it used to close itself on the frame it opened.
  • Three copies of the track visibility rule, two copies of the split-time drawing, two copies of a curve's arc measurement and two identical CD play routines are each one piece of code now, with tests where there were none.

Save editor

Rage-Racer-Save-Editor-0.6.3-alpha-*.zip is a separate program for editing a
save. It opens on the saves it finds on your machine and edits everything one
holds: progress and money, the three garages, class records, lap, total and
sector times, ranking and time attack tables, the team logo, the controller
calibration and the sound settings.

It reads and writes the same file the game does, and recomputes the three
checksums on the way out, so a save the game refused comes back as one it
accepts. It knows the file names all three releases use on a memory card, and
picks the release and slot out of the file it opened.

Windows, Linux and macOS. Nothing to install: unzip it and run it.
