Release v0.5.0

Added

  • History settings (#22): keep History for 15 minutes, an hour, a day, a week, or until ClusterCut quits (the default, as before), or turn it off; and keep at most 10 to 500 entries (50, as before). History is only held in memory, so it never outlives ClusterCut. Thanks to @mtudor for the suggestions.
  • The manual Send/Receive shortcuts now work on Wayland. They previously relied on X11, so on Wayland they never fired, and never at all in the Flatpak. ClusterCut now registers them through the desktop's global shortcuts portal (GNOME 48+, KDE Plasma 5.27+, Hyprland): GNOME and KDE ask once, Settings shows the key the desktop assigned, and "Change" opens the desktop's own shortcut settings.
  • Hyprland's portal never assigns keys, so on Hyprland ClusterCut can bind them itself over Hyprland's IPC while it runs ("Bind Keys in Hyprland", off by default; your config files are never edited), or show the line to add to your config.
  • On Wayland desktops without the portal (Sway, GNOME 47 and older), bind a key to the new ManualSend / ManualReceive / CopySend / CutSend / ReceivePaste D-Bus methods; Settings shows the gdbus command.
  • One-step manual shortcuts (#21). Copy & Send (Ctrl+Alt+C) presses Copy in the focused app and sends the selection, Cut & Send (Ctrl+Alt+X) cuts it instead, and Receive & Paste (Ctrl+Alt+V) applies the received content and pastes it. In a terminal ClusterCut presses the terminal's own copy and paste keys, Ctrl+Shift+C/V, instead of Ctrl+C/V. If nothing gets copied, a notification says so and nothing is sent. Works on Hyprland, KDE Plasma, GNOME, X11, Windows and macOS. KDE asks once for permission to press keys, on first use or from the Allow button in Settings; macOS needs ClusterCut allowed under Privacy & Security > Accessibility. GNOME needs version 4.2 of the ClusterCut extension, which presses the keys itself (only for ClusterCut, and only copy, cut and paste). Thanks to @mtudor for the suggestions.
  • Keep My Clipboard (Settings, with either direction in manual mode): Copy & Send, Cut & Send and Receive & Paste put back what was on your clipboard before, so sending or receiving doesn't replace it. Text, rich text, images and files come back; an app's private formats (a spreadsheet's cell data, say) don't. Receive & Paste gives the app half a second to read the paste first.

Changed

  • ClusterCut no longer keeps copies of items that never appear in History, such as a manual-mode copy waiting to be sent or a received item waiting to be applied.
  • The old shortcuts move to Shift: Send Clipboard (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C) sends what's already on the clipboard, as Ctrl+Alt+C used to, and Receive Only (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V) applies received content without pasting. Settings still on the old defaults move automatically; customised keys keep their meaning.
  • With Auto-Send off, a manual send now sends everything Auto-Send would: rich text, images (large ones included) and copied files, not just plain text. This covers the shortcut, the D-Bus ManualSend method and the in-app Send button, whose panel now previews the image or files about to go. With nothing on the clipboard, it now says so in a notification instead of appearing to do nothing.
  • The deb, rpm, and AUR packages now install the same launcher and icon as the Flatpak: app.clustercut.clustercut.desktop, matching the app ID that desktop portals use to identify ClusterCut, listed under Utilities. The old ClusterCut.desktop remains as a hidden entry so launchers pinned before the change keep working.
  • Every installer (deb, rpm, Flatpak, Windows and macOS) is now built on GitHub from the release's tag, rather than on the maintainer's machines. The deb and rpm are built on Ubuntu 22.04, so they need glibc 2.34 instead of 2.39 and also run on older distributions such as Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12. The macOS DMG is still signed and notarized.

Fixed

  • Clear History now also deletes the stored content (in memory, and on disk for large items). It used to empty only the list, keeping the content until ClusterCut quit or needed the space.
  • Deleting a History entry now deletes its stored content on the other devices too, not just their list entry.
  • On Windows, notifications whose title or text contains & or < now show. Windows refused the whole notification, so for example a received file named with an ampersand went unannounced.
  • With Auto-Receive off, accepting a large received image or text (Receive shortcut or the app's Apply button) now puts it on the clipboard. It was downloaded, then parked as pending again.
  • The Receive shortcut now applies rich text and records the item in History, as the app's Apply button does. With Auto-Send on, text received this way is no longer sent straight back to the cluster.
  • Switching Auto-Send or Auto-Receive off from the tray or the GNOME Quick Settings tile now turns the manual shortcut on straight away, and switching back turns it off. It used to wait for a restart or a settings change in the window, on every platform.
  • Sending a History item to the cluster now works with Auto-Send off. It was only recorded locally, never sent.
  • A manual send (shortcut or D-Bus) now shows its text in History and is kept there. It appeared as an empty "Sent" entry since the 0.3.6 History rework.
  • On Linux, the window's close button works again without first minimising or maximising the window, a regression since 0.4.3. Making the window resizable had removed the workaround that kept GTK's titlebar buttons responsive; it is back, adapted to the resizable window (except on Hyprland), and restoring the window from the tray or the GNOME extension unminimizes it first.
  • Toggling Auto-Send or Auto-Receive from the GNOME Quick Settings tile no longer freezes ClusterCut. The D-Bus toggle refreshed the tray menu while still holding the settings lock, and the tray menu takes that lock too, so every later settings access hung.
  • The app icon now shows in Linux launchers for the deb, rpm, and AUR packages. They only shipped a 1024 px PNG, a size the icon theme never looks in.

📦 Installation

Linux

Native Install
ClusterCut is available as a .deb and .rpm file for Debian-based and RedHat-based distributions respectively. It's also available on AUR for Arch and derivatives as clustercut-bin.

Flatpak
ClusterCut is also available via Flatpak.

Tip

Unless you're on GNOME with Wayland, please use the native install. Flatpak does not allow sandboxed applications to monitor the clipboard, so this would severely reduce the usefulness of ClusterCut. On GNOME, this is mitigated via an extension. The Flatpak version also does not support X11.

You can also download the Flatpak bundle below.

macOS

Download the DMG file from the assets of this release.

Windows

Download the EXE file from the assets of this release.
