Why Windows flagged Nebula 1.0.1

Microsoft Defender and some other antivirus programs reported Nebula-Setup.exe 1.0.1 and the
Nebula.exe it installs as Trojans (Wacatac, Yomal, Sabsik; #26, #43). These names come from cloud and
machine-learning verdicts on new, rare, unsigned files, not from a match with known malware. Nebula's
source is public, and the 1.0.1 files are built from it. But the programs did things malware also
does. Setup carries other programs inside it and downloads a compiler to build the game, which is how
Nebula works. The launcher also contained code it did not need: finding which program holds a file
open (Windows Restart Manager), and downloading files. The uninstaller deleted itself through a hidden
command prompt, and one program had no file details. Where Windows Security blocked a file during
install, Setup stopped with "Operation did not complete successfully because the file contains a virus
or potentially unwanted software".

1.0.2 removes the launcher's unneeded code and the hidden command prompt, and gives every program its
file details (see Security below). Before release, every program in it was scanned with Microsoft
Defender.

Nebula 1.0.2 adds frame rates above 60 and NVIDIA DLSS, and fixes the game closing after a save.

Install or update

  1. Download Nebula-Setup.exe below and run it. The file is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen
shows "Unknown publisher": choose More info, then Run anyway.
  2. If Nebula 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 is installed, choose Update. Saves and settings are kept. The update
performs a full recompile of the game
(a few minutes, from the copy of the game Setup kept; you are
not asked for the game again). It is required: frame rates above 60 need the recompiled game code.
  3. For a new install, select your copy of the game (ISO, RVZ, WIA, WBFS or extracted folder) and
    choose Install.

New in 1.0.2

  • Frame rates above 60. The game runs at 60 frames per second, as on the Wii. Above 60, Nebula
draws the frames in between from the game's own scene: the camera, characters, objects and effects
move smoothly at your display's rate (75, 90, 120, 144, 165, 240 Hz and others). Choose the rate under
Frame rate in the Nebula launcher's Graphics tab, or FRAME RATE in the in-game settings
menu: the display's rates up to its refresh rate, or Unlimited. 60 FPS stays the default.
  • NVIDIA DLSS (RTX graphics cards). Choose NVIDIA DLSS under Upscaler, then a DLSS
    quality
: DLAA, Quality, Balanced, Performance or Ultra Performance. Nebula does not include
NVIDIA's files: the first time you choose DLSS, Nebula Setup shows NVIDIA's license and downloads them
from NVIDIA's own release (32 MB). Setup can also download them during install. With DLSS, frame rates
    are 30, 60, or a whole multiple of 60 (such as 120 or 240).

Fixes in 1.0.2

  • The game closed after saving (#28). After a save, the game opens the Wii's WiiConnect24 service
(which posts messages to the Wii Message Board) and first asks its scheduler to pause. Nebula did not
answer that request and closed the game. It now answers it as Dolphin does, and the game continues.
  • Setup stopped when Windows Security blocked a file. Setup now says which file was blocked and how
to report a false detection to Microsoft.

Security

  • The launcher and Nebula Settings no longer contain file-ownership lookup (Restart Manager) or a
downloader. A file that cannot be moved during install or uninstall is reported with what to close.
  • Uninstalling no longer runs a hidden command prompt to delete Setup. A copy of Setup in the
temporary folder removes it after Setup closes, as standard Windows uninstallers do.
  • DLSS is downloaded by Nebula Setup only, from NVIDIA's release on GitHub, and every file must
match its published SHA-256. The game loads NVIDIA's Streamline only after checking NVIDIA's digital
signature. Neither the launcher nor the game downloads anything.
  • No test tools in the release. The scripted input, teleports, galaxy tours and picture captures
used by Nebula's automated tests are compiled out of the released game.
  • File details. Every program carries its name, version and publisher (nebula-recomp.exe had
    none).
  • No build-machine paths. The programs no longer contain folder paths of the PC they were built on.
  • Scanned before release. The release build stops if Microsoft Defender detects anything in a
    program it builds or embeds.

Texture pack support (#7) is in development and is not part of this release.
