Nebula 1.0.1 fixes crashes, slow cutscenes, dithering, install failures and save importing reported
against 1.0.0, and adds language and text speed settings.

Install or update

  1. Download Nebula-Setup.exe below and run it. The file is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen
shows "Unknown publisher": choose More info, then Run anyway.
  2. If Nebula 1.0.0 is installed, choose Update. Saves and settings are kept. The update performs a
    full recompile of the game
(a few minutes, from the copy of the game Setup kept; you are not asked
for the game again). It is required: the language packs, the text speed setting and the cutscene fix
live in the recompiled game code, so a 1.0.0 game cannot use them.
  3. For a new install, select your copy of the game (ISO, RVZ, WIA, WBFS or extracted folder) and
    choose Install.

New

  • Language (#3, #13). Play in English, Français or Español, the three languages of the USA
release: all of the game's text, its menus and the HOME Menu. Choose it in the Nebula launcher's new
General tab (also in Nebula Settings) before you play, and the game starts in it. You can also
change it in the in-game settings menu's GENERAL page; the game then switches the next time Nebula
starts. Your saves are not changed. Updating from 1.0.0 recompiles the whole game once to add the
language packs (see Install or update).
  • Text speed. Dialogue and Rosalina's storybook can appear at the original pace, 2x or 3x: in the
Nebula launcher's new General tab, or live in the in-game settings menu's GENERAL page.
Movie subtitles keep the movie's pace.

Fixes

  • Space Junk Galaxy crash (#15). With a draw distance above Original, the game crashed in Space
Junk Galaxy. Draw distance also decided which objects the game runs, so objects that only belong to
another mission came to life. The draw distance option is removed, and an older setting is ignored.
  • Beach Bowl Galaxy crash (#6). The game closed every time Mario was about to jump out of the
water. A graphics command the game sends while drawing Mario at the water's surface is now handled.
More broadly, a graphics setting Nebula does not recognise no longer closes the game anywhere: it is
skipped and noted in the logs, so at worst one effect draws incorrectly.
  • Slow cutscenes (#16). On CPUs without FMA3 (for example Intel Core 2nd and 3rd generation, many
Pentium and Celeron models, AMD Phenom and the first AMD FX), every movie cutscene ran at about 5
frames per second and its sound broke up.
Movies now play at full speed on every CPU. Game code on these CPUs also runs faster after the
    update recompiles it.
  • Dithering (#5). A fine dot pattern covered smooth surfaces and effects, most visibly at a raised
internal resolution. Nebula now keeps full colour precision everywhere, as Dolphin does.
  • "Build failed due to too many errors" during install (#17). PCs with an older Visual C++
installed (for example Visual C++ 2013, which other programs install) failed while compiling. Setup
now always uses its own compiler settings, whatever else is on the PC.
  • "Access to the path ...\staging\...\app is denied" at the end of install (#4). A program such as
a virus scanner reading the newly built files blocked the final step. Setup now waits for it and,
if needed, copies the files instead. If a program holds a file open for good, the message names it.
A repair or uninstall that meets a file in use stops without changing anything, so it can simply be
    run again.
  • Importing a Dolphin save crashed the game (#11). In the Nebula launcher, choose Advanced,
Import saves…, From a folder…, and select Dolphin's save folder for the game (in Dolphin,
right-click Super Mario Galaxy and choose Open Wii Save Folder). Export saves… writes your
saves to a zip. A save copied into the saves folder by hand also works now. Your previous saves
are kept in a backup folder. The README explains where saves live.
  • Installing with less than 8 GB of RAM (#10). Setup now lets you continue after a warning.
Running Nebula with less than 8 GB of RAM is experimental and at your own risk: compiling takes much
longer, and the game may stutter, run slowly or close.
  • Setup failed at the very end under Wine or Proton (#2). A shortcut that cannot be created no
longer stops the install; Setup records it and finishes. (Nebula itself does not run under Wine or
    Proton yet.)

Other changes

  • Crash logs. If Nebula ever closes unexpectedly, it saves a short text file about what happened.
To include it in a report, open Nebula Settings, choose Advanced, Open diagnostics, and attach
the newest file in crash-logs. It costs nothing while you play.
  • The in-game settings menu's CAPS page, a read-only list of graphics capabilities, is replaced by the
    GENERAL page.
  • Settings saved in Nebula Settings while the game runs now reach the running game (graphics, volumes,
text speed; the language and input source at the next start), and changes made in the game meanwhile
are no longer undone when Nebula Settings saves.
  • Updating from the launcher's Check for updates no longer needs the launcher closed first.
  • The draw distance option is removed (see the Space Junk Galaxy fix).
  • When a diagnostics recording ends, the notice has an Open folder button that shows the recording's
ZIP in Explorer, ready to attach to a report.
  • Crash reports name the game function that failed and the calls leading to it.
  • The diagnostics recording names the CPU and whether it has FMA3 and AVX2.

Texture pack support (#7) is in development and is not part of this release.
