What's new in Kiosk Satellite 2026.9.82
This release makes wind driven clouds in Weather Mood glide instead of jumping between frames, lightens fair weather skies, adds device details to /api/health, restricts kiosk provisioning to adb and fixes screensavers that could stop the app from drawing on devices that run Impeller on OpenGL ES.
Improvements
- Wind driven clouds glide in Weather Mood. Clouds render a new image about once a second and used to fade from one position to the next, which looked like a slideshow whenever they moved fast. Each cloud image now slides along with the wind on every frame until the next one is ready, low clouds faster than high ones.
- Steadier Weather Mood frame pacing on 32-bit devices. Clouds render a small piece on every frame again instead of a larger piece on every other frame. The heavy frames reached the screen unevenly, which showed as judder in moving clouds.
- Lighter fair weather clouds. Cloudy, Partly cloudy, Windy and Windy with clouds looked dark enough to rain, with slate gray undersides and gray cloud centers. Dry skies without storm darkness now keep light, white and soft gray clouds however much of the sky they cover. Rain, snow, hail, fog and storms keep their heavier shading.
- More open skies in more scenes. The Rainy, Snowy and Windy with clouds scenes have about a quarter less cloud cover, like Cloudy. Pouring and Snowy with rain keep their full cover.
- A fuller sky in the Windy scene. The two cloud lanes above the weather chips each carry a second cloud, so one drifts in as the other leaves.
- More device facts in
/api/health. The health endpoint now reports the system WebView package and version, the network link type with the Wi-Fi signal, link speed and frequency, the time since the device booted and the screen orientation and rotation. The Wi-Fi fields need no location permission and leave out the network name. The newgetNetworkLinkcommand returns the same link details (#696).
Fixes
- Screensavers no longer freeze the app with the Impeller renderer on OpenGL ES. Since 2026.9.81, starting a screensaver over a dashboard could stop the app from drawing for good on devices that run Impeller on OpenGL ES, such as the Echo Show 8 and the Meta Portal Go. The surface Flutter draws on now comes back while Flutter is still paused, so the renderer is never rebuilt on the wrong thread.
- Only adb can provision a kiosk. Any app on the device could send the
ks.provisionintent and change any setting, including turning on the remote admin with a password of its choosing. Provisioning now goes to.ProvisionActivity, which Android opens only for the adb shell..MainActivityignores the extra and logs a warning. Scripts that provision over adb need the new activity name (#695). - Immich Media shows every photo before repeating one. Each screensaver session used to shuffle the whole playlist again and start from the top, so a frame that goes in and out of the screensaver all day kept bringing back photos it had already shown while most of the library never came up. Sessions now pick up where the last one stopped and show the photos not yet seen first. Once every photo has had its turn the order is shuffled again and a new pass begins. New uploads join the current pass at random spots. With Shuffle off, the slideshow resumes where it stopped instead of starting over at the newest photo (#699).
- Clouds no longer go missing in Partly cloudy and Windy. Wind could carry the clouds out of view for minutes, and a calm scene after a windy one could stay empty until the next screensaver. Each cloud now comes back at the other edge as soon as it leaves, and clouds glide back to their usual spots once the wind drops.
- Weather Mood clouds no longer reset while quality adjusts. When a device lowered the cloud resolution to keep up, the clouds vanished and faded back in.
- Lightning no longer drops Weather Mood to a few frames per second. On devices that run Impeller on OpenGL ES, such as the Echo Show 8, every strike slowed the scene for up to three seconds. The bolt now uses an additive blend that looks the same over storm clouds.
