What's new in Kiosk Satellite 2026.9.78
This release adds optional TLS encryption, expands Weather Mood with a clock and weather information bar and improves hand/fingers gesture detection, on-boarding QR scanner and intercom visibility.
New Feature: TLS Encryption
- Encrypt remote administration. Enable Use HTTPS under Device > Remote Administration to encrypt the browser interface, API and WebSocket connections. Switching protocols shows a confirmation with a copyable destination address and reconnects the browser after the change (#672).
- Encrypt camera streaming and ONVIF. Enable Encrypt stream under Camera > RTSP & ONVIF Streaming to protect video and audio with RTSPS and ONVIF services with HTTPS. Encrypted streams require a compatible viewer.
- Independent intercom encryption. Enable Encrypt communications under Intercom > TLS to encrypt calls between kiosks. Calls require matching encryption settings. The kiosk list identifies encryption mismatches and announcements skip incompatible kiosks.
- Manage certificates in one place. Device > TLS manages the certificate shared by encrypted services. Self-signed certificates renew automatically. You can also import a certificate, renew or replace the generated certificate and copy or download its public certificate. Fleet and intercom connections accept self-signed certificates automatically. Private keys stay encrypted on the device and are excluded from configuration exports and fleet synchronization.
- Localized controls and messages. TLS settings, certificate dialogs, validation errors and encryption guidance are available in English, German, Spanish and French.
New Feature: Weather Mood Clock and Information Bar
- A built-in clock. Weather Mood now includes a clock enabled by default, with independent font, weight, size, color, date, 24-hour format and text shadow controls.
- Live weather information. A new bar shows readings from the selected weather entity and is enabled by default. Customize its location name, optional readings, text scale, color, background opacity and shadow. It adapts to narrow screens and leaves room for widgets and At a Glance pills.
- Dawn and dusk scenes. A third time-of-day variant adds a peach horizon, a lower warm sun and subtle cloud lighting across every weather type. It follows solar elevation with a local-time fallback and is available in Weather Preview. The new Weather Mood controls are localized in all supported languages.
Improvements
- Adjustable hand gesture hold duration. Require a gesture to remain steady for 0.5 to 3 seconds to reduce accidental triggers. The default is 1 second, with Instant available. A new Hand Gestures group appears below Clapper and the tester shows confirmation progress on the device and in Remote Admin.
- Set brightness through ESPHome actions. The new
set_brightnessandset_screensaver_brightnessactions accept values from 0 to 100, including 0% on supported devices. They update default or screensaver brightness and require adaptive brightness to be off (#670). - Scan setup QR codes with the front camera. The scanner opens the front camera by default and includes a Flip camera button. Devices with only a rear camera use it automatically and the flashlight control is disabled when unavailable (#668).
- Clearer weather temperatures. The Weather widget labels apparent temperature on a separate Feels like line. Its Feels like only option also labels the reading. The Weather Mood bar keeps one temperature and substitutes the apparent reading when Feels like is enabled and available.
- More readable weather details. Weather widget conditions, readings and icons are larger relative to the temperature and the Clock widget date is larger. Weather Mood uses larger reading titles, clearer spacing and consistent clock and date colors. Its information bar defaults to white text over a 50% opaque black background.
- Refined Weather Mood scenes. Partly cloudy scenes have more cloud coverage and subtle silver linings. The larger sun and softly glowing moon sit farther right. A Scene blur slider softens the animated background while keeping text clear.
Fixes
- Visible intercom push-to-talk control. The idle button now uses solid teal so it stands out against the light background. Holding it switches to a teal-tinted fill with a stronger outline and a soft glow.
- Fresh screenshots show Weather Mood. Overview now captures the active Flutter screen after the dashboard stops rendering behind Weather Mood, fixing black screenshots while the screensaver is visible.
