What's new in Kiosk Satellite 2026.10.42

The Echo Show 8 (1st Gen) now has its own Kiosk Satellite Edition image. Plugins can run an action you choose in their settings, the app restarts on its own when it freezes and dashboard filtering works on views with auto-entities.

New Feature: Echo Show 8 (1st Gen) on LineageOS 18.1

  • The Echo Show 8 gets its own image. The 1st generation Echo Show 8 now has a LineageOS 18.1 (Android 11) Kiosk Satellite Edition image in lineageos-echo-kiosk-satellite, next to the Echo Dot and Echo Show 5 images. It builds on R0rt1z2's port, which brings the screen, camera and Bluetooth. On its first boot it installs Kiosk Satellite as the device owner with every permission it needs, and Kiosk Satellite then makes itself the home screen and reports the Show's real Wi-Fi MAC address to Home Assistant.
  • A wake word that works over music. Kiosk Satellite hears the Show through Amazon's own far-field processing, with echo cancellation and a beamformer over all four microphones. In testing from 2.5 m at 50% volume, the wake word caught almost three times as many voices over music as with the image's own echo canceller, and as many over the assistant's voice as in a quiet room.
  • Amazon's wake word engine. Amazon is offered as a wake word engine, with Alexa, Echo, Computer, Amazon and Ziggy in 17 locales. It runs on the Show and sends nothing to Amazon.
  • System updates. Kiosk Satellite shows new releases of the image under About > System in the remote admin, on the Overview and on the Firmware update entity in Home Assistant, and installs them from any of the three.
  • Get started. The new Echo Show 8 guide covers setup, the wake word engines, volume, the button, system updates and moving from R0rt1z2's image. The image's own guide covers unlocking and installing. The install erases the Show, so export your Kiosk Satellite configuration first if you are moving from R0rt1z2's image.

New Feature: Plugin actions

  • Plugins can run an action you choose in their settings (#1165). A plugin setting of the new action type opens the same action chooser as Gestures, so you can pick a dashboard view, a Home Assistant script or service, another app, another plugin's action or anything else a gesture can do. The plugin runs it when you use one of its own controls, such as a button on a navigation bar plugin, with no second place to set it up. Only you choose the action. A plugin cannot change it, so it decides when the action runs and never what it does. Lockdown Mode stops these actions. Disable Gestures does not, since they come from the plugin's own controls. It works in plugin lists too, where each row can have its own action.
  • Plugin actions follow the plugin's names. A gesture that runs a plugin action now saves only the plugin and action IDs and shows the names the plugin has now, so a plugin that renames itself or its actions in an update no longer leaves the old names on the Gestures page.

Improvements

  • The reactive activity bar starts off on the Echo Shows. A fresh install on an Echo Show running the Kiosk Satellite image turns off Reactive activity bar, since the Shows are not fast enough to animate it smoothly. The bar still shows, without following your voice and the answer. An upgrade, a restored backup, a settings import or a fleet profile keeps the value it had.

Fixes

  • A frozen app restarts on its own (#1166). If the app's main thread stays stuck in one task for a full minute, Kiosk Satellite now restarts itself and comes back on screen instead of staying frozen until someone touches it. On some devices WebView can deadlock while it draws a frame. Android then shows its "isn't responding" dialog, and nothing in the app could recover because every other safeguard runs on that same thread. A slow device never triggers it, since slowness means many short tasks and not one task that never ends. The first two minutes after the app starts are left alone. Where the main thread was stuck is saved to the app log so the restart can be reported.
  • Realtime conversations end right after the goodbye. When the assistant ends a realtime conversation, it now closes as soon as its last reply finishes playing. Gemini could start another turn after the goodbye and never finish it, which kept the conversation open until something in the room interrupted it. That extra turn is no longer played or waited for.
  • Dashboard filtering works with auto-entities (#1170). A view with auto-entities cards now keeps filtering Home Assistant updates to the entities it shows. auto-entities goes through every entity in Home Assistant each time it updates its list, which made Kiosk Satellite stop filtering on any view that had one, whatever its filters were. Cards that filter by group also work now. They show the group's members, and when you add or remove one the view picks up the change on its own.
  • A WiiM's TV input no longer brings up Now Playing (#1172). With Show TV and line-in off, a WiiM followed through Music Assistant now reads as idle while it plays its TV, optical, line-in or phono input, so the screensaver stays in place. Only the Sonos input names were recognized before. With the setting on, these inputs show as TV, Line-in or Phono.
