What's new in Kiosk Satellite 2026.10.41
This release brings Kiosk Satellite to the Echo Show 5 Gen 2 on its new LineageOS 18.1 image, with system updates, Amazon's wake word engine and settings that fit the device from the first start. Plugins can now list hidden entities and tell whether music is playing, and the App Launcher's auto-return waits during calls.
New Feature: Echo Show 5 Gen 2 on LineageOS 18.1
- The Echo Show 5 gets its own image. The Echo Show 5 (2nd gen) now has a LineageOS 18.1 (Android 11) Kiosk Satellite Edition image in lineageos-echo-kiosk-satellite, the same repository as the Echo Dot's. It installs Kiosk Satellite on its first boot as the device owner with every permission it needs, makes the wake word work over music and keeps more memory free than the upstream port.
- System updates. On an Echo Show running the image, Kiosk Satellite finds the image's updater the same way it does on the Echo Dot. About > System shows the ROM version and a newer release when there is one, the Overview lists it under Needs attention and the Firmware entity in Home Assistant can check for it and install it. The help text before an install and on the Overview now names the device instead of the Echo Dot. Echo Dot images 2026.10.7 to 2026.10.9 carry the Echo Show's updater by mistake, and Kiosk Satellite keeps updating those Dots through their own.
- Amazon's wake word engine. On an Echo Show running an image that ships it, Amazon is now offered as a wake word engine, the same as on the Echo Dot. It has the same wake words, stop word and Wake word language setting, on the screen and in the remote admin.
- The right settings from the start. A fresh install on the Echo images turns on Use real Wi-Fi MAC address, so the ESPHome device links with the entries your router and network integrations already have. The images always join Wi-Fi with the factory address. On an Echo Show it also turns on Act as the home screen and comes to the front, because Android 11 takes the microphone away from an app in the background. Now Playing starts in the Horizontal layout there, which fits the Show's wide screen. An upgrade, a restored backup, a settings import or a fleet profile keeps the values it had. If Kiosk Satellite becomes the device owner after its first start, it takes the home role and moves ESPHome to the real address at that moment.
- A new guide. The Echo Show 5 guide recommends the Kiosk Satellite Edition image and covers setup, the wake word engines, volume, the button, system updates and moving from R0rt1z2's image.
Improvements
- Plugins can list hidden entities in the entity picker (#1157). An
entitysetting with"includeHidden": truealso lists the entities Home Assistant hides, such as a light group hidden so its members show on generated dashboards. It works onentityfields in a plugin'slistsetting too. Every other picker still leaves hidden entities out. Hidden entities show Home Assistant's hidden icon next to their name, on the device and in the remote admin. A setting that already points at a hidden entity no longer says the entity is gone from Home Assistant. - Plugins can tell whether music is playing (#1158).
getSendspinPlayerand thesendspin.playerevent now includeplaying, and the event fires when music starts or stops. It follows the same playersendspinControlcontrols, so with a followed player it reports that player. A plugin can pause the music during a doorbell call and resume it afterward only if it was playing before. - Auto-return waits during calls. The App Launcher's Return automatically no longer brings the kiosk back during a call in another app, such as Zoom, even if nobody touches the screen. The switch is now called Wait during media and calls and holds the return for video, music and calls. Once the call ends, the full Return after time starts over. Calls need no extra permission.
Fixes
- The Echo Dot's Firmware entity no longer goes missing after a restart. Kiosk Satellite listed its entities to Home Assistant before it knew the image updates itself, so the Firmware entity was left out after every app start and came back only when the entity list changed for another reason. It is now listed from the start.
- Older fleet profiles now sync the intercom key (#1156). A fleet profile saved before the intercom was added never turned on Intercom key under its credentials, so each follower kept its own key and every kiosk showed Different key for the others. A profile that still syncs the credentials it started with now turns the intercom key on, and its followers get the leader's key on the next sync. If you switch it off afterward, it stays off.
