What's new in Kiosk Satellite 2026.10.40

This release moves the Echo Dot to its new LineageOS 18.1 image, adds a screen light to the barcode scanner and lets you pick which toasts show over the dashboard. It also fixes Sendspin stuttering on Bluetooth headphones and a wake word that stayed deaf when the microphone was not ready at boot.

New Feature: Echo Dot on LineageOS 18.1

  • The Echo Dot follows its new image. The Echo Dot image moved to LineageOS 18.1 (Android 11) in lineageos-echo-kiosk-satellite. On a Dot running it, About > System links that repository and system updates come from its Echo Dot releases.
  • Moving from CM14.1. The CM14.1 image gets no more releases and can only move to the new one by hand, since the move needs an erased data partition. On a Dot still running it, Kiosk Satellite now checks the new image's Echo Dot releases itself. When there is one, About > System shows New image available with a link to the guide, the Overview lists it under Needs attention and the Firmware entity in Home Assistant shows its version, with the guide as its release page. Install there does not start anything.
  • An updated guide. The Echo Dot guide now covers the new image, its buttons, Bluetooth and the move from CM14.1.

Improvements

  • A screen light for the barcode scanner (#1148). A new button in the scanner turns the screen white around a smaller camera preview and puts the screen at full brightness, so the screen lights the code for a front camera. It helps a kiosk on the wall read a barcode without tilting it. Your brightness comes back when the scanner closes, and the brightness setting and its Home Assistant entity do not move. Switching does not restart the camera. The scanner remembers your choice for the next scan, both in plugins and in the setup token scan. The choice belongs to each device and fleets do not sync it.
  • Pick which toasts show. A new Show system toast notifications setting under Device > User Interface lists the parts of the app that show pop-up messages over the dashboard: back button hints, gesture actions, Hold mode, dashboard links, downloads, network status, update checks, Voice Satellite notices, timers, alarms, the Music Library, Intercom, the App Launcher and plugin actions. Untick the ones you do not want to see. All of them show by default. Messages in Settings always show, and blocked pages keep their own Show blocked page notice switch under URL Filter.
  • Plugins can name the Kiosk Satellite release they need (#1140). A plugin's manifest can set minAppVersion, such as 2026.10.40. Kiosk Satellite will not install or update a plugin that needs a newer release, also through fleet sync, and the review and the error name both versions. Browse plugins shows Needs Kiosk Satellite 2026.10.40 or newer on such a plugin instead of Install or Update, and the version you have keeps running. Community Plugins now requires the field on new submissions.

Fixes

  • Sendspin no longer stutters on Bluetooth headphones. Music played through Sendspin to Bluetooth headphones or speakers stuttered and popped about once a second. Android's Bluetooth timestamps include the headset's delay, and Kiosk Satellite rejected them for being in the future, then kept correcting for a playback position that moves in bursts. It now accepts those timestamps and smooths over the small steps the Bluetooth stack makes as it sends whole codec frames. If headphones connect or disconnect while music plays, it measures the new output's delay again. Other outputs keep their current timing.
  • The wake word comes back if the microphone is not ready at boot (#1145). If Android's audio was not ready yet when Kiosk Satellite started after a reboot, the wake word engine failed to open the microphone and never tried again, so the device ignored every wake word until the app restarted. It now reopens the microphone after 5, 15 and 30 seconds, then after 1, 2 and 5 minutes, and stops at the first try that works. If every try fails, reloading the dashboard or calling retryWakeWord still starts it again. A microphone permission taken away is not retried on its own.
  • Realtime scripts know the device with more than one LLM API (#1143). If Home Assistant's MCP Server had more than one LLM API ticked, scripts run in a realtime conversation never got ks_device_id. Home Assistant then puts the API's name in front of each tool, such as assist__script__play_music, and Kiosk Satellite did not count those as scripts. It does now, and the model no longer sees the ks_device_id field of a script that declares it.
  • Certificates work again after app data is restored to another device or ROM. Kiosk Satellite encrypts its TLS identity with an Android Keystore key, and that key never comes along with a restore or survives a keystore reset. After one, every certificate request failed with "Certificate operation failed." until someone deleted the file by hand. Kiosk Satellite now moves the unreadable file aside, creates a new certificate and logs a warning. If you imported a certificate, import it again. Home Assistant and other clients that trusted the old certificate need to trust the new one.
