Concat 0.2.9
Highlights
- ✨ Transitions are clips. A transition sits on the timeline and is placed, moved and trimmed like any other clip, over a cut or on a single shot. Its own knobs (Push's direction, a wipe's softness, a whip's speed) are set on it (#621)
- ✨ Transparent projects. A clear background with a checker under the preview, or a background colour of your choice, and export with alpha as ProRes 4444 or VP9 (#456)
- ✨ Chroma key that finds the screen itself, an eyedropper, Remove Black, and batch edits in the inspector (#543, #470)
- 🗣️ Your own voice. Import a recording on the Voices shelf and keep it as a voice with a name, picture and description (#518)
- ✨ Speed curves on the Speed tab: drawn, from a preset, smooth or straight (#322)
- 📝 Styled words in a title. Give some of a title's words their own colour, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough or size, plus text case and typography controls (#529, #450)
- ✨ Captions in the language spoken. Pick it, and whisper listens only to the speech. Each caption starts when its words do (#231, #619, #438)
- ✨ Effects and sounds as layers. Drag a picture effect or a sound effect onto the timeline and it covers everything under it
- ✂️ Fade knobs on a sound's corners: drag along the clip to fade it in or out
Export
- 📤 About 2.4x faster at 4K: frames are drawn two ahead and handed to the encoder as YUV, and the encoder runs on its own thread
- 📤 H.264 and HEVC use the platform's own encoders, GPU first. HEVC falls back to Kvazaar on the CPU, and H.264 to OpenH264 where Windows has no encoder
- 📤 AAC uses Apple's encoder on a Mac and iPhone, Microsoft's on Windows, and Android's on a phone. A mix ends on its last sample
- 📤 A Mac's hardware export follows the quality you ask for, not VideoToolbox's own bitrate
- 📤 The last frame is drawn, with no black frame after it, and a clip after two transitions in a row no longer vanishes
- 📤 Running out of video memory is an error the export recovers from, not a hang
Faster
- ⚡ Scrubbing shows the nearest picture at once and the exact frame when you stop (#472)
- ⚡ An idle app trims its frame caches and gives the memory back
- ⚡ Imported cards show their pictures at once, and phone filmstrips come from keyframes
- 🗣️ Enhance runs on the GPU in Concat's own compute shaders: 4.2 s per 1080p frame, where ONNX Runtime took 27. It works only on the span a clip shows and reuses repeated frames
Editing
- ✂️ Up and Down jump to the previous and next cut. New projects offer 4:5 and 3:4
- ✂️ A quick split follows the playhead (#538). Keyframe diamonds are larger and open the Keyframes pane (#490)
- ✂️ Linkage: captions, titles, overlays and sounds move with the main track
- ✂️ The tab strip scrolls instead of running off the pane (#567)
- 🐛 Copy, paste and duplicate carry every clip setting, and a paste into another project plays the right file
- 🐛 ⌘Q saves the project (#437). File › Open and recent projects close the open one first, saved
- 🐛 A missing file is noticed when the window comes back, and the relink dialog opens on it (#409)
Media
- 📁 Screen recordings and variable-frame-rate clips play every frame at its moment (#457)
- 📁 MKV, WebM, FLV, WMV, MTS/M2TS, .ts, .mpg, HDV and DV footage shows the right picture at the right width, wherever you seek (#457)
- 📁 Sound stays in sync in files whose streams start at different times (#457), and a trimmed clip's sound starts at its cut (#535)
- 📁 SVG imports as a still, WebM alpha is kept (#429), and Save Audio As writes a WAV Concat can open again (#544)
Windows
- 🐛 Direct3D 12 compiles shaders with FXC, never a stray dxcompiler.dll on PATH (#418), and every effect's shader builds there (#548)
- 🐛 On a software adapter the window draws on the CPU and the monitor on a device of its own (#503, #480)
- ✨ A Concat (safe graphics) Start menu entry (
concat --software) for anyone whose window is drawn as coloured squares (#389, #242, #449) - 🐛 A project named NUL or CON gets a folder Windows can write, and a path spelled another way isn't imported twice (#440)
Mac
- 🐛 A Mac whose Metal compiler fails at startup still gets a window (#600, #423)
- 🐛 Concat starts on macOS 12 again: it no longer links libavdevice (#342)
Phones
- 📱 An export whose hardware encoder stops taking frames finishes on Android's software encoder (#491)
- 📱 A launch that dies at startup sends the next one to OpenGL ES, which keeps the monitor and exports (#507)
- 📱 Linked for 16 KB pages. Back closes the sheet on top, then leaves the editor, and the project is saved when Android closes the app
- 📱 On the timeline, hold to move a clip, tap to select, swipe to scroll. Pick several files in order and add them with one tap
Voices and downloads
- 🗣️ Kokoro and Pocket TTS are gone. On the desktop, Chatterbox reads with four public-domain LibriVox voices
- 🐛 Downloads use the system's proxy and root certificates (#517) and say why they failed. A model you fetched in the browser can be chosen instead
Languages
- 🌍 Azerbaijani is new, and Simplified Chinese (#576), Urdu (#562) and Spanish have no English strings left
Automation
- 🤖 Quitting during an export cancels it, tells the caller, and leaves no temp file (#431)
- 🤖 A line that isn't UTF-8 gets a parse error instead of ending the session (#337), and MCP results carry caching hints (#463)
Before you install
- Projects: 0.2.8 projects open in 0.2.9. Once 0.2.9 saves one, 0.2.8 refuses to open it ("saved by a newer Concat") instead of silently dropping what it can't read.
- Text to speech on phones: with Kokoro gone, phones have no text-to-speech in this release. Reading with the phone's own system voice is in progress.
- Windows: this release is not code-signed yet. SmartScreen asks before it runs: More info › Run anyway. Where Smart App Control is on, Windows refuses unsigned programs; see the code signing policy.
- Android: no automated check has started this APK: CI's emulators run x86_64 and it is built for arm64. If it does not open on your phone, say so.
