Beta pre-release. DWD wind shows the model step nearest to now, cached forecast tiles outlast a long refresh interval, zooming out stops multiplying tile requests, and thirteen fixes from a whole-project review. Drop-in upgrade from 3.12.0 — no config changes required. No breaking changes.
What's new
- Wind shows the model step nearest to now — the DWD wind overlays rounded the time down to the model's step, so ICON showed a slice up to an hour old and AICON (3-hourly, the default outside the US) one up to almost 3 hours old. They now pick the nearest step and refresh every half hour, so what's shown is within half a step of now.
- Cached forecast tiles are kept as long as the refresh interval — after a reload or a dashboard switch, stored DWD forecast tiles were reused only if their run was at most 30 minutes old, so with a long
forecast_refresh_minutesa switch away and back discarded tiles the card was showing a moment before. The window is now the refresh interval plus 10 minutes, never less than 30. Suggested by @m42cel (#279). - Zooming out no longer keeps the zoomed-in tile grid — the loop pinned its tile zoom to the highest level visited, so a four-level zoom-out drew 24 tiles per frame instead of 3 and a default loop could trip RainViewer's request limit. Tiles now follow the map's zoom.
Fixed
- A loop no longer freezes after a tab switch or a pan — a refresh that found nothing newer (about every other one) left the animation stopped, with the toolbar still showing playing.
- A card that loaded no frames retries on its own — a dashboard that started before its Wi-Fi was up, or during a source outage, showed an empty map until a pan or a reload. It now retries after 30 s, backing off to 5 minutes.
- A failed past frame no longer takes the forecast with it — the loop stops at the archive boundary as before, but DWD's forecast frames still load.
- Tile retries end with the tile — a retry armed after a failed tile request survived the tile leaving the map; with no network, a tablet's tiles kept retrying for the life of the page.
- Alert popups stay open across the 60-second refresh — the alerts layer redraws only when the alert set or its geometry changed.
playback_speedapplies from the first frame — without the viewer layer control the YAML value never took effect.- An invalid
dwd_time_overrideno longer leaves the map without radar when a wind overlay is on. - Re-centre on mobile returns to the user's device tracker, as the initial view does, instead of the home location.
- Streamlines overlay with
preload_while_hidden— every hide and show started another hourly refresh that outlived the card. - Clearing a centre coordinate in the editor changed Home Assistant's own copy of the config in place.
- Very large alert polygons (a marine warning spanning many zones) could stop the alerts layer refreshing.
- Zone cache sweep — expired zone shapes are removed in one IndexedDB transaction instead of one each.
- A refresh interrupted by a teardown no longer arms one last update timer on the discarded player.
Internal
- The wildfire overlay computes each fire's extent once per fetch instead of on every Home Assistant state change (2.3 ms → 0.07 ms a tick with 90 fires).
Earlier
3.12.0 fixed US wind, added NOAA radar outside CONUS, cached DWD forecast tiles across reloads, and made map_style: Auto use Home Assistant's map tiles without a CARTO key.
