3.12.0-beta2

latest release: v3.12.0-beta3
pre-release4 hours ago

Beta pre-release. NOAA radar now covers Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam, maps no longer go blank without a CARTO key, and US wind speeds are corrected. One breaking change, below, for map_style: Auto without a CARTO key; otherwise no config changes required.

⚠️ Breaking change

  • Without a CARTO key, Auto uses Home Assistant's map tiles instead of CARTO. CARTO stopped serving maps without a key and answers with a blank tile, so Auto showed a blank map. Without carto_api_key, Auto now uses HA's own map tiles (2026.10+, inverted in dark mode like HA's map), or Grey/GreyDark/OSM on older cores. To keep CARTO's look, add a free key from carto.com/basemaps/apikey (no account needed) in the editor's Map section or as carto_api_key. Choosing a CARTO style without a key shows a banner, and Satellite drops its CARTO labels.

Worth knowing

  • US wind looks calmer — it was overstated about 1.9× (see Fixed).
  • NOAA loops at 5 or 10 minutes now keep their frames on a fixed grid, so the newest frame can be up to one interval old (see Fixed).

Fixed

  • NOAA radar was blank in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam since 3.7 — only the continental US mosaic was drawn. Every US regional mosaic is now included.
  • US wind (NWS NDFD) was about 1.9× too strong — speeds served in knots were read as m/s, so barbs, arrow colours and flow speeds overstated the wind.
  • Loops drifted down to their refresh interval — a running 10-minute NOAA loop filled with 5-minute frames and covered half its window, and a RainViewer frame_stride_minutes: 20 loop played at 10 minutes. Frames now stay on the grid the loop started on; cards with the same source and interval share it, and a reload within half the loop's window keeps it.
  • NOAA loops could stay on 10-minute frames after a hiccup fetching NOAA's frame list, until a reload. The loop now rebuilds at the configured interval once the list is back.
  • RainViewer loops could reach 10 minutes further back than past_minutes when RainViewer's list skipped a frame. Frames are now picked by time.
  • DWD's heaviest rain could be cut out — the 45–75 mm/h colour, and ≥ 85 dBZ on the dBZ layer, were removed as coverage-mask pixels.
  • NWS "Extreme Heat" and a dozen other current alert types were uncategorised and showed with the fallback colour. Every event NWS issues now has its official colour.

Changed

  • RainViewer requests are capped at 250 a minute (was 500) — its tile server allows 500, and its FAQ says 100 per IP, shared by every device behind one router.
  • NOAA survives a missing regional mosaic — if opengeo stops serving one of the five regional layers, it fails every NOAA tile; the card now leaves that layer out and redraws without it.
  • Failed NWS zone requests are logged as one console error per batch, instead of a warning per zone.

Earlier in 3.12.0

3.12.0-beta1: DWD forecast tiles survive a reload, relative times on every frame, hatched forecast segments and stale-data cues, history loads before the forecast, and a © Sources popup on narrow cards.
