A native Windows port of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, statically recompiled from the game's PowerPC code. No emulator. No game data is included: you need your own dump of the game (USA) from your own Wii U.
New: netplay rooms (beta)
Play with friends on their PCs, up to 8 players, in any mode, on any stage, with items and mods.
- Host: on the launcher's NETPLAY page, turn on HOST MY GAMES and play. Your room is listed for everyone.
- Join: the same page lists the open rooms with how many are in each (up to 8). Pick one and you're in. Joining needs no game files.
- No router setup: the two PCs connect directly, with nothing to forward.
The host's game is the only one running. It is streamed to each friend in 1080p at 60 fps with sound (encoded on the host's graphics card), like Steam Remote Play Together, and their controller plays as one of the host's Wii U Pro Controllers (players 2-8). That way nothing can fall out of sync, which is why 8-Player Smash and everything else work online.
It's beta: it was tested on one PC, not yet between two homes. A few connections (some mobile and carrier networks) don't allow direct connections between PCs. If joining fails, play over a LAN or a VPN such as Tailscale, and please open an issue with smash.log from both PCs.
Fixes
- Older processors (#1): PCs without AVX2 (before Intel Haswell or AMD Ryzen) closed at once without a word. The launcher now runs the new
smash-compat.exeon them; it is slower and needs the update. - Stutter every few seconds (#2): the game starts about 1,600 short-lived threads a second, and every one was being kept open. Over a session that grew into millions and caused hitches. Threads are now reused, and the port uses about a fifth less CPU.
- Stuck on the "Joins the Battle!" screen (#3): a controller Windows reports that never sends input (for example a virtual pad driver) could take the GamePad's place, so the pad you were pressing did nothing. Now the first pad that presses a button is the GamePad, and
smash.loglists every pad connected. - Shader hitches (#5): shaders already compile in the background and are cached; the port's own display shader now ships precompiled.
- Effects cut off in the top-left quarter of the screen: lasers, Falco's fire, Mario's fireballs and the Fan's wind now draw fully.
- US4MP mod pack: picking one of Ganondorf's costumes no longer crashes.
- 8-Player Smash at 120 fps: holds 120 at 4K.
Install
- Download
Smash4PC-v0.1.1-Windows.zipand unzip it anywhere. Updating from v0.1.0: copy the new folder's contents over your old one, which keeps your save, settings and mods. - Run Smash 4 PC.exe, choose PLAY, and pick your game folder (
0005000010144F00), then the update (0005000E10144F00, recommended) and DLC (0005000C10144F00, optional): the folders Cemu uses. - Play. To play with friends, open NETPLAY.
Needs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and a GPU with Vulkan 1.3. README.txt in the zip has the controls, netplay, mods, online setup and troubleshooting.
Known limits
- Found a problem? Open an issue with
smash.log(beside the program) attached. - Netplay guests get their delay to the host added; a close connection plays best. The host sends about 12 Mbit/s to each guest, so a full room needs a fast upload.
- Smash's own online modes still need Pretendo. There is no GamePad screen (the port is TV-only).
- Mods load only with the update (they are made for v304).
