Brawl Recompiled v0.5.1
Options menu in the game
- Everything is in the game now. F10, or Home (or Back + Start) on a controller, opens an options menu drawn in Brawl's own style and fonts: Graphics, Audio, Controls, Gameplay, Cheats, Mods, Online, System and Quit. It works with a controller, the keyboard or the mouse.
- No launcher window. "Brawl Recompiled" starts the game straight away. A window only appears the first time, to pick your disc image; the game starts as soon as it's extracted.
--settingsstill opens the old window (Wii save import).
New
- Save states: F5 saves and F7 loads, anywhere (mid-fight, mid-level), with 3 slots (F6 switches slot). States last until you close the game and load in the same match or level they were saved in.
- Cheats: Gecko codes in Dolphin's format (
engine\UserData\Cheats\RSBE01.ini; a Dolphin cheat file works as it is), switched on and off in Options > Cheats while you play. Comes with codes tested on this port: Dolphin's tournament settings (everything unlocked, 3 stocks, 8 minutes, no items, no tripping, Sheik and Zero Suit Samus on the character select), bigger fighters and items (2x, 3x or 4x), invisible fighters, emerald (Subspace) fighters, infinite shield, infinite jumps and no "Ready to fight" bar. Not in online play. - Fast-forward: F8, at 2x, 3x or 4x (Options > Gameplay). Off during online play.
- Fast menus: screen changes, loading and info screens run 3x as fast (on by default; Options > Gameplay). Menus with a cursor and fights keep their normal speed.
- Updates in the game: the game checks GitHub for new versions; Options > System installs one and starts the game again. Your saves, settings, mods and disc stay.
- Older processors (#21, #23): PCs without AVX2 (before Intel Haswell / AMD Excavator) now run a build of the engine made for them, picked automatically. Windows only for now.
- HD texture packs made for Dolphin (REX, Project+): copy the pack's
RSBE01folder intoengine\UserData\texture_replacements. Dolphin's ownLoad\Textureslayout also works.
Mod fixes
- Custom music in mods works. REX, Project+ and other Project+-based builds had silent match music and missing menu tracks: the port's disc file table was one byte off from a real disc's, and Project+'s music engine reads names at fixed places in it.
- Project+ My Music works (#19). Every stage showed the menu's song list. A mod's replacement for one of Brawl's menu modules never ran: the game kept calling the original. Mod code in on-demand modules now runs, so each stage lists its own songs with their custom names.
- Mods no longer store their files twice. The SD card is now read straight from
engine\UserData\SD. REX's card went from 13 GB on disk to under 50 MB, and setting up a card takes seconds instead of minutes. Your existing card is converted on first start. - What the game saves to the SD card is kept when you close the window (Project+ My Music settings, for example). Before, closing the window skipped copying those files back.
Fixes
- Smooth 120 fps: frame interpolation no longer drops to 60 for seconds after a loading screen or menu hitch: a single late frame only skips its own in-between frame. Held 120 fps through whole matches in testing, at 1080p and 4K.
- Button remapping (#25): Options > Controls changes which controller button is which, and "Button layout" switches to Nintendo positions (A on the right) in one go, so A and B can be swapped.
- Black screen or "Null backend" errors (#14, #22, #27): Options > Graphics > Graphics API picks Direct3D 12 or Vulkan, and GPU compatibility mode forces the driver workarounds. Takes effect after a restart.
- Already extracted game (#20): the first-start window has "Use an extracted game folder", so a disc extracted with Dolphin is used where it is, no image needed.
- Update notice (#26): the game says when a new version is out.
- Controller navigation (#28): there's no launcher to navigate any more; everything is in the in-game menu, which works with a controller.
- Disc extraction (#17): a damaged or crafted disc image can no longer write files outside the Disc folder.
- Ultrawide: Fill Window on a 21:9 or 32:9 screen showed a seam about 4/5 of the way across, with part of the background left over from an earlier pass. The stage now fills the screen cleanly, with the HUD in the middle 16:9.
- Linux / Steam Deck: "The game could not start: Permission denied" (#24). The launcher now restores the game's executable bit when an unpacker dropped it.
Already in the v0.5.0 downloads since 2026-10-29: the REX/Project+Ex fix for dash attacks, rolls and dodges sending you flying (#6, #13). If you still see it, download v0.5.0 again or update to this version.
Download: BrawlRecompiled-v0.5.1-Windows.zip (Windows) or BrawlRecompiled-v0.5.1-Linux.tar.gz (Linux / Steam Deck). Already on v0.5.0? Extract over your folder; from now on the game updates itself.
