Appearance

  • new — Appearance groups its tabs. Nine tabs under three labels — Look (Theme & type, Background, Surfaces), Bookmarks (Layout, Rows, Link previews) and Header & bars (Header, Action bar, Date & weather) — and link preview cards have a tab of their own. Look, Surface and Grid are renamed Theme & type, Surfaces and Layout; the old ids and words still open them (APPEARANCE_TAB_GROUPS, previews, renderSectionTabStrip).
  • new — settings moved to where they belong. Clock placement leads Date & weather instead of sitting on Header; Show favicons, the offline colour and favicon harmonisation are one Favicons panel on Rows; the browser tab title, custom title and favicon upload are one Browser tab & branding panel on Header.
  • new — label and control side by side. Appearance rows put the label and a one-line explanation on the left and the control on the right, in one shared column; a longer explanation is cut with an ellipsis and stays whole in its tooltip and the ℹ. Under 600px the control goes under its label (config-tabs.css, renderControlPanels).
  • new — Fine-tune folds. The seven Backdrop sliders and the Card glass opacity and blur sit under Fine-tune, folded until opened; the fold says how many of its settings differ from the default and keeps its state across a repaint. The filter, Only changed and Find settings open the fold they land in. The separate Backdrop settings panel is gone; its sliders are in the Backdrop panel (renderFineFold, schema control fine).
  • fix — the settings filter survives a repaint of Background and Surface. applyDomSettingsFilter looked for the body inside the container it was handed, and a repaint hands it the body itself.
  • new — chip groups. Runs of Show the … button switches are one row of chips: the action bar (9), the header buttons (4), the category header extras (3), the row status (3) and the date line (2). Each chip is still its own setting; the group has one ↺ for the chips that differ and one ℹ that lists what each chip does. The link preview fields and the Bookmarks view's columns and rail blocks use the same chips over their one list (schema control chips, setChip helper).
  • fix — the filter finds a single chip. Typing one chip's name hid its group's label row, and with it the whole panel; the label row now reads its chips too (applyDomSettingsFilter).
  • new — panels fold, and say what they are set to. On every Appearance tab the first panel is open and the rest fold to a header with one line of their current values, changed values first; a panel opened or folded by hand stays that way, per tab, in this browser. The filter, Only changed, Find settings and a link to #config/appearance/<tab>/<panel> open the panel they land in, and Reset panel in a folded header does not open it (applyAppearanceFolds, PANEL_SUMMARY_BY_TYPE, openConfigPanel e2e helper).
  • new — a list of panels on long tabs. A tab with more than three panels lists them above the preview; choosing one opens it and scrolls to it, and the panel in view is marked. The filter narrows the list with the panels; under 900px it is left out (renderAppearancePanelIndex).
  • fix — Date & time starts with a capital like the other panel titles.
  • fix — the Appearance tabs wrap instead of scrolling. On one scrolling line half of the nine tabs sat past the edge; now a group that does not fit moves to the next line whole, its label over its tabs, so every tab is on screen down to phone width (config-view.css).
  • new — the action bar animation is a dropdown. Picking a style plays it on the real bar at once, so the six cards that each played it again are gone and the panel is about half as tall.
  • new — Show the action buttons leads the action bar settings, above where the bar stands and how large its buttons are: it decides whether any of the rest matters.
  • new — five action bar button sizes. Button size in Appearance → Action bar runs from extra small to extra large; medium is the default, one step up from the 28px squares the bar had, which are now small. An install from before the setting gets medium (actionBarSize).
  • new — the key chips on the action buttons start off, for new installs too; turn them on in Appearance and they stay (showActionKeys).
  • fix — the header destinations follow the button size. Bookmarks, Inbox, the page tabs and the header links stayed 40px tall at every action bar size, so beside medium and larger buttons they stood shorter than the group next to them; they now measure the button size plus its surround (dashboard.css).
  • fix — the theme field shows a whole theme name. Its control was capped at 300px, which cut most names of up to 25 characters; it now has room for them on one line (config-tabs.css).
  • fix — a tab reached through Find settings stays put. Arriving on Appearance from another section through Find settings, a tile or a link, the Random theme promo pulled the reader back to Theme & type half a second later; only a click on the tab strip counted as a choice. Every way into a tab does now (switchAppearanceTab).
  • fix — a docked action bar no longer slides into place on a load. Its slide ran on the first placement too, sweeping a side column some 200px up the screen as the page appeared; it now only slides when it goes into its edge and comes back (action-bar-autohide.js, data-action-bar-sliding).
  • fix — Save as theme opens the editor without a wait. The saved theme brings the look on screen, and picking it put that same look back, redrawing the header bar and the dashboard twice; on a slow machine the page froze for seconds. A look's parts that are already in place are now left alone (applyLookAnswers).
  • fix — the Media detail card uses the app's colours. It sits on <body>, outside every widget, so it named variables that were not there: it was transparent, in the corner and with unstyled buttons. It now takes the app's background, text and border, sits in the middle, and has its own buttons (dashboard-media-tile.css).

Tags

  • new — subjects in a tree. A subject can name a broader parent (kubernetes under containers under dev, broker under investing under finance); 247 of the 471 now do. A suggestion comes in the reader's own words, now up the tree: whoever tags #finance but never #broker is offered #finance on a broker's site. Turning a broader tag down on a site turns down what sits under it there too. Catalogue schema v3; the parents live in scripts/tag-catalogue/parents.json and are written in by merge.cjs or, without a rebuild, apply.cjs (tag-suggestions.js, tag_catalogue.go, tag-catalogue-hierarchy.spec.js).
  • new — a quiet lookup for new links. A bookmark or inbox link that arrives after this browser first looked has its site looked up on Wikidata without a button, an overlay or a notice, and what comes back is offered as a chip. It never writes a tag. Only links newer than the first look count, a host is tried once per thirty days, a round takes at most twenty hosts and waits behind the reader's own Find tags; Look up unknown sites on Wikidata off turns it off (TagCatalogue.autoLookup, TagSuggestLive.autoSearch, tag-auto-lookup.spec.js).
  • fix — the answers of a Find tags round land on the rows as they arrive. What the catalogue already knew is on screen at once, before the first answer from Wikidata, and a burst of answers redraws a view once instead of once per batch (TagCatalogue.onChange with wait).
  • fix — 135 misfiled catalogue sites. Telecom operators under electronics, flight search under search, amazon.co.jp under streaming, yahoo.com under television, drinks brands under containers, three bare IP addresses and more: 126 are refiled and 9 dropped. The fixes sit in scripts/tag-catalogue/manual/cleanup.json, which a rebuild reads as handwork, so they hold.

Docs

  • MANUAL.md §16 and §17 describe the nine Appearance tabs in three groups, the folding panels, the chips, the action bar button sizes and the Link previews tab; two new screenshots (16-appearance-rows.jpg, 16-appearance-action-bar.jpg) and eight retaken.
  • Config → Help → Grid, display & date and the theme topic follow the new tab names in all six languages; the new Appearance strings (tab and group names, chips, button sizes, Fine-tune) are translated in nl, de, fr, zh and es, and the cross-references in Help, tips and the overview now name Layout, Surfaces and Link previews.
  • README.md and its Appearance screenshot show the grouped tabs; it also lists what nextDash asks for by itself (three things, each with a switch and a variable), names Config → Monitoring and its three tabs for alerts, and mentions the key legend and the daily install count.
  • static/data/whats-new/v1.19.7.json and its index entry, with three highlights (Appearance in three groups, panels that fold, five action bar sizes) and their picture and recordings from tests/fixtures/whats-new-media/v1.19.7.js; whats-new-stub.js tokens bumped to …-v1.19.7 / whats-new-v337, and tests/whats-new-hidden-release.spec.js follows.
