Moving a block with the keyboard works without a Home key and without opening a bookmark on the way: the up arrow reaches a block's title, Tab its //, and Space there picks the block up. Focus on a title and on its // wears the selected row's tint. Help has a panel of its own on moving categories and widgets, with drawings that move, and the dashboard tour, tips, cheat sheet and manual follow. Held back from the What's new window (hideFromModal), so v1.18.0 keeps leading it.
Dashboard
- new — ↑ on the top row of a block steps onto its title.
Shift + Homewas the only key that reached a title, and most Mac keyboards have no Home. On the top row of a category, collection or widget — every column's top row in a spread category —↑now focuses the title and leaves the cursor on the row;↓goes back to that row and↑again goes on to the block above.←and→keep walking the columns, also from a title (stepUpToTitleandstepDownFromTitleinkeyboard-navigation.js). - fix — Tab on a title reaches its
//. With the grid cursor on, Tab walked to the next row and stepped past the handle, so the keyboard pick-up the intro and Help describe could only be reached by tabbing through every bookmark before it. Tab on a title now goes to its//, and Shift+Tab on the//back to the title; where the terminal layout hides the//, Tab falls through as before. - fix — Space on the
//and Enter on a title no longer open a bookmark. The cursor stays on its row while the focus is on the title, and the grid's own keydown, which runs first, opened that row in a new tab before the block was picked up or folded. Enter and Space are left to the title and the mover while one of them has the focus. - fix — widget rows only a wide tile shows are no longer cursor stops. A narrow Health tile kept them in the DOM, drawn as nothing, so
↓put the cursor on a row nobody could see and↑found one "above" the top row (_isNavigableWidgetElementnow asks for client rects). - fix — after a keyboard drop the focus stays on the
//.redrawKeepingPlaceput it back on the title on every settle frame, so the next Space no longer reached the block just placed; it now restores the element that had it. - fix — focus on a title and on its
//in the row tint. A focused title wears the selected row's tint (--bookmark-row-selected-bg) instead of a 2px ring, and a focused//a small chip of it around the two slashes, which now sit in a span of their own (reorderGlyphindashboard-render-core.js). The ring around the handle took the space after//and the title's letter spacing along, and.category-title-label'soverflow: hiddencut it to its top and right sides. The header styles that draw a grip tint the grip the same way.
Help and docs
- new — Help → Structure & bookmarks → Moving categories and widgets. A panel of its own, opened by three looping drawings — the landing box, the column line that makes a block wide, and a block sent to another page — and the keys from a bookmark without the mouse. The drawings rest on where the block ended up, so with animations off or reduced motion they show the result (
blockMoveinsetting-art.js,setting-art.css). The three bullets on moving in the Structure panel became a pointer to it. - new — the dashboard tour opens on moving a block. A first step, New: move categories and widgets where you want them, carries a category from one column to the next with the dashed box ahead of it and the keys beside it; the tour has 21 steps. Its tip id is unchanged, so readers who finished the tour are not shown it again.
- new — a tip for moving without a mouse (
tipEditMoveBlockKeys), and the cheat sheet has Tab on block title, with↑besideShift + Homeon the category and widget header rows;nextDash-cheatsheet.pdfis regenerated. - docs — MANUAL §7.4 has
↑andTab, and §9.2 the keyboard route and an animated drawing of the three moves (screenshots/manual.md/09-move-block.svg).
Tests
- tests —
tests/dashboard-block-move-keyboard.spec.jsdrives the keys: arrows and Shift+Home to a title, Tab and Shift+Tab, Space, arrows and Enter, from a row lower in the block; ↑ from a top row and ↓ back to the same row; → from a title to the next column; Space on the//and Enter on a title with no page or tab opened; the focus tint on the//in all six header styles and on a title. Each fails without its change. - tests —
tests/config-help-move.spec.jsopens Help on the panel, finds the three drawings and the keys, checks the loop runs, and that with reduced motion the block rests where it landed.tests/dashboard-tutorial.spec.jsandtests/dashboard-tutorial-contrast.spec.jsfollow the 21 steps.
