rEFInd_GUI 3.5.0

Added

  • Unified Kernel Images (UKIs) (#115, thanks @jreyes138 for the report in #113 and for testing on real hardware). Systems that boot UKIs from EFI/Linux are now detected: kernel-install with layout=uki, Fedora's UKI images, or any ukify/mkinitcpio UKI there.
    • Each distro's UKIs appear as one Boot Option. Its menu entry boots the newest kernel, and the older kernels are rollback entries in that entry's submenu (F2, Insert or Tab in the boot menu).
    • The boot menu stays fully manual (scanfor manual): the order, icons and default are still the ones you pick in the GUI. A slot keeps its place across kernel updates.
  • kernel-install hook. The deb, rpm and Arch packages install /usr/lib/kernel/install.d/99-zz-rEFInd_GUI-uki.install. After every kernel install or removal it re-points the UKI entries in the installed refind.conf at the kernels that are there now, and changes nothing else in the file. Install Config does the same, so an older staged config never publishes a deleted kernel.
  • rEFInd stays first after kernel updates on Fedora uki-direct systems. uki-direct gives each new kernel its own firmware boot entry and moves it ahead of rEFInd, so the firmware would boot the new kernel directly. The hook hands the priority back to rEFInd. Anything else you deliberately put first, such as Windows, is left alone.

Fixed

  • Create Config refuses to write a config with no boot entries (#114, thanks @jreyes138). Previously it installed a menu that booted nothing.
  • A theme can no longer turn rEFInd's auto-scan back on. rEFInd applies the last scanfor it reads, so a theme file with its own scanfor line overrode the generated one. The config now repeats scanfor manual after the theme include.

Notes for UKI systems

  • On Fedora, remove a kernel through its kernel-core package (sudo dnf remove kernel-core-<version>). Removing only the kernel-<version> meta package doesn't run kernel-install.
  • Fedora's kernel removal leaves the removed kernel's UKI file on the ESP. rEFInd_GUI leaves that kernel out of the menu and names the file, but never deletes boot files; remove it yourself to free space.
  • UKIs on a separate XBOOTLDR /boot partition aren't scanned yet. Under Secure Boot, rEFInd must be able to verify the UKI.

Upgrading

Re-run the installer for your platform, or just update the deb, rpm or Arch package:

curl -L https://github.com/jlobue10/rEFInd_GUI/raw/main/install-rEFInd-GUI.sh | bash

The sudoers rule is unchanged in this release, and the kernel-install hook comes with the package. On a UKI system, run Create Config and Install Config once after upgrading so the menu gets its UKI entry.

The Windows installer (setup.exe) is not code-signed. Verify it against the .sha256 file next to it.
