The calculator is drawn as an adding machine's tape rather than as one
large number. The version that shipped in 1.3.0 put the answer in block
numerals, which was reasoned from a resemblance — the clock and the pomodoro
use them — rather than from what a calculator is. Those two show a single
continuously changing value you glance at, and the numerals exist so it reads
across a room; a calculated answer is read once and checked against the working
that produced it. The numerals also cost six cells a digit, so they only ever
appeared for answers small enough not to need them. The panel now has
WORKINGandRESULTcolumns like the other lists here,
oldest entry at the top and the line you are typing at the foot, where a tape
feeds from. Results are aligned on the decimal point. The answer forms beside
the line as you type, and Enter keeps it.The row you are typing is the brightest thing in the panel with its answer in
brass; entries behind it recede.
Added
- A clear key for the calculator.
cclears what you are typing andC
clears the tape as well — the CE and AC of a desk calculator. Previously only
Escdid this, listed as a secondary binding, so it was easy to miss.
Fixed
- The calculator could show a truncated answer in two narrow-panel cases: a
result handed to a column narrower than itself, and a result pushed back over
the edge by the padding that aligns decimal points. A number missing its tail
is a different number, so both now degrade to scientific notation or give up a
place of alignment instead. - Calculator error phrases were too long for the column they are drawn in, so
cannot divide by zeroappeared ascannot divid….
