v5.3.1 - Sun and Moon arc card & timezone validation fix
New Features
-
Sun and Moon arc card in the Weather row — a browser-rendered panel showing today's sun path with sunrise, sunset and solar noon; twilight and night shading; the sun at its current altitude; and the moon's track with a phase-shaped icon and % lit readout. It is a stock Grafana text panel rendering inline SVG — no plugin, no datasource, no queries. Positions are computed in the browser by a compact port of SunCalc, used under its BSD-2-Clause license and documented in
dashboards/THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES. Location comes from the latitude and longitude thatsetup.shalready writes to the Sun and Moon datasource, so there is nothing new to enter on import; with no location set, the panel points you atsetup.shrather than drawing the wrong place. Handles polar day/night and the southern hemisphere, follows the Grafana light/dark theme, and redraws every minute and on resize. The two weather graphs are stacked so their time axes align, with the Sun and Moon card beside them. (PR #868 by @holstein13, follow-up to the Sun and Moon row exploration in #805) -
Opt-out dashboard for anyone not wanting the card —
dashboards/dashboard-no-sunmoon.jsonis identical to the defaultdashboard.jsonbut without the Sun and Moon arc card. Import it instead of (or over) the default dashboard to skip the panel; see the dashboards README for details.
Existing installs: run ./upgrade.sh, then re-import dashboards/dashboard.json to pick up the new panel. No datasource, InfluxDB or container changes are needed.
Bug Fixes
setup.shno longer accepts misspelled timezones — entering a typo such asAmerican/Denver(forAmerica/Denver) used to pass validation because the last-resort check treated any value thatdatecould parse as a POSIX TZ string, which glibc does for almost any alphabetic text. Setup then failed later in InfluxDB withunable to find time zone American/Denver. The timezone is written into the InfluxDBtz('...')clauses, which only resolve IANA names, so POSIX strings such asGMT+5could not work either. The POSIX fallback has been removed: valid IANA names (includingUTC,EST5EDTand multi-level names likeAmerica/Argentina/Buenos_Aires) are still accepted, and anything else shows a warning with an example and a note that InfluxDB will fail, before the existing explicity/Noverride. (PR #873 by @jasonacox-sam, closes #872 reported by @hulkster)
Contributors
Thanks to @holstein13 for the Sun and Moon arc card — a fully self-contained panel that matches the dashboard's palette and typography — and for iterating on the layout, horizon smoothing and DST handling. The setup.sh timezone validation fix came from @jasonacox-sam, prompted by a report from @hulkster.
