Download TimeCapsuleSMB.dmg below, open it, and drag TimeCapsuleSMB to Applications. If you have v3.8.0 or newer, the app offers this update itself
You can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
With Homebrew, brew install --cask jamesyc/tap/timecapsulesmb installs the macOS app

brew install jamesyc/tap/tcapsule installs the tcapsule command, with no bootstrap step. On macOS 14 and older, Homebrew has no prebuilt Python 3.15, so it compiles Python first.

What's Changed

Nearly full disks
- Fix Samba restarting every 15 to 24 seconds on a disk with under about 2 GiB free. Each new block on such a disk takes 10 to 30 seconds, so Samba could not finish starting in the 10 seconds it was given. It now gets 120 seconds. To get this fix, run "Install / Update Samba"
Debug logging
- Debug logs stop at about 4 GiB in all, in log.smbd and log.smbd.old. They used to grow until the disk filled up
- Install / Update Samba deletes log.smbd and log.smbd.old from every disk just after it stops Samba, which also frees space on a full disk. Copy off any log you still need first
- Checkup warns while debug logging is on, because it slows the device down
macOS app
- Updates after this one download in the background, then a window offers to install them. Untick "Automatically download and install updates in the future" in that window to be asked first
- The update window waits while the app is behind other apps, a text field has focus, a dialog is open or a device operation runs. Check for Updates... opens it at once
Add Device
- Models that cannot run TimeCapsuleSMB, such as an AirPort Express, no longer show in Nearby Devices, and Add Device does not preselect one or fill in its address under Manual Address. Add Device's own list still shows them, and says why when you click one
- Fix a device search finishing during an add changing the page. An add now stays on screen until it ends
