macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)
- Download
TimeCapsuleSMB.dmgbelow, open it, and drag TimeCapsuleSMB to Applications. If you have v3.8.0 or newer, the app offers this update itself - You can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
- With Homebrew,
brew install --cask jamesyc/tap/timecapsulesmbinstalls the macOS app
Python CLI installer (for macOS 12+, Linux)
brew install jamesyc/tap/tcapsuleinstalls thetcapsulecommand, with nobootstrapstep. On macOS 14 and older, Homebrew has no prebuilt Python 3.15, so it compiles Python first.
What's Changed
- Samba share name issues
- Fix shares that Finder,
mount_smbfsand Time Machine could not open when the disk's name has accents, Japanese voiced kana or Korean syllables, such as the default Japanese disk nameAirMacディスク(#413). HFS stores those characters split into parts, and macOS asks for the share by its combined name. The share now takes the name as macOS sends it, combined by Apple's Unicode 3.2 table, and Bonjour keeps the disk's own spelling, as Apple'sdiskddoes - A disk named
global, globals, homes, printersorIPC$, or one whose name matches another share's under Samba's case rules, gets(dkN)added to its share name. A%before a letter Samba expands becomes_ - Checkup reports a share name whose characters are split into parts
- Fix shares that Finder,
- Checkup
- Fix Checkup's SMB file checks failing due to a macOS bug on macOS 26.5, 15.7 and 14.8, which refuse a mount folder of the app's own. macOS now picks the folder, as it does for Finder
- Restarts
- When Apple's ACPd stops without restarting the device, the app says after one minute to unplug it, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in, and keeps waiting. The operation carries on when the device starts up. It fails with "Apple ACPd is broken" only if the device has not come back 10 minutes after it went down
- A command or Checkup started in the first minute of another command's restart changes nothing and says the device is restarting. It used to report ACPd as broken
- CLI
- When AirPort Utility can see the device but a command cannot, the CLI says that a terminal app other than Terminal (such as iTerm2 or Visual Studio Code) needs Local Network access, instead of giving the app's steps for TimeCapsuleSMB
