macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)
- Download
TimeCapsuleSMB.dmgbelow, open it, and drag TimeCapsuleSMB to Applications. If you have v3.8.0 or newer, the app offers this update itself - You can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
- With Homebrew,
brew install --cask jamesyc/tap/timecapsulesmbinstalls the macOS app
Python CLI installer (for macOS 12+, Linux)
brew install jamesyc/tap/tcapsuleinstalls thetcapsulecommand, with nobootstrapstep. On macOS 14 and older, Homebrew has no prebuilt Python 3.15, so it compiles Python first.
What's Changed
- macOS app
- Fix the app hanging on some Intel Macs, and on Apple silicon Macs that open it under Rosetta. On x86_64, Python 3.15's
ctypesneeds memory that is both writable and executable, so the app's Python retried forever. The app's Python is now signed to allow that memory
- Fix the app hanging on some Intel Macs, and on Apple silicon Macs that open it under Rosetta. On x86_64, Python 3.15's
- Disks
- Install / Update Samba, Activate, Uninstall, a firmware restore that restarts the device, and every other restart now refuse to start while a disk check is running on the device, such as a Disk Repair that kept running after this Mac disconnected. A restart would interrupt the check, and Uninstall would report success with the files of the volume being repaired still there
- Checkup now shows a disk check that is running
- When a disk check has waited minutes on the disk, the app now says to give a running Disk Repair a few more minutes before unplugging the device
- When this Mac moves to another network while the device restarts, the app says so while it waits, naming the device's Wi-Fi network to rejoin, instead of reporting a device that did not come back. It says to reconnect this Mac and run Checkup
- When SSH reaches the device but macOS refuses the app's connections to AirPort (port 5009), the app reports a Local Network block, with the steps to turn TimeCapsuleSMB off and on in “System Settings” > “Privacy & Security” > “Local Network”. It used to report the device as unreachable
- Local Network cards name the other copies of TimeCapsuleSMB on this Mac, or on a mounted disk image, which can make macOS block it, and say to wait 2 minutes after an update, since macOS can block a new version for a few minutes
- Turning on SSH checks Local Network access first, before it restarts the device
- A saved link-local IPv6 address on a connection this Mac no longer has, such as an unplugged USB Ethernet adapter, is reported as such, with steps to reconnect it or refresh discovery
- Maintenance
- Starting a maintenance task while another one is running leaves the running one alone, and the new one says why it did not start
- Add Device
- Fix a device clicked just as discovery updated the list going back to the list instead of asking for its password
