macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)
- Download
TimeCapsuleSMB.dmgbelow, open it, and drag TimeCapsuleSMB to Applications. If you have v3.8.0, the app offers this update itself - You can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
- With Homebrew,
brew install --cask jamesyc/tap/timecapsulesmbinstalls the app
Homebrew CLI (Apple silicon, macOS 14+)
brew install jamesyc/tap/tcapsuleinstalls thetcapsulecommand, with nobootstrapstep. On macOS 14 and older, Homebrew has no prebuilt Python 3.15, so it compiles Python first.
What's Changed
- Settings
- Add "Require SMB signing" option, off by default. Every client then has to sign its connection, which costs more than half the speed.
- Rename "Disable SMB signing and encryption" to "Turn off SMB encryption". Samba cannot turn signing off for SMB2 or SMB3, so that half of the old option did nothing.
- Install and uninstall
- Install no longer waits ten seconds between syncs, and no longer checks the uploaded files a second time after the sync (the "Verify Flushed Upload" step)
- Uninstall runs
syncafter removing the files and before the restart. If a disk that stopped responding makes the sync time out, the device restarts anyway
- NetBIOS
- Fix Apple's NetBIOS name server (
wcifsnd) sometimes quitting at startup. The check for whether it was ready bound its control port for an instant, and a server starting at that moment could not bind it. The check now reads the server's sockets withfstatinstead
- Fix Apple's NetBIOS name server (
- Checkup
- On a Mac, the SMB checks use macOS's own SMB client (
smbutil, and a mount hidden from Finder) in place ofsmbclient. The CLI on an Intel Mac, where Homebrew no longer buildssmbclient, now runs them too. Linux still usessmbclient
- On a Mac, the SMB checks use macOS's own SMB client (
- macOS app and CLI app
- Improved dependency handling so dependencies are always up to date, for security reasons
- Comes as a notarized
TimeCapsuleSMB.dmg. Automatic updates still downloadTimeCapsuleSMB.app.zip - Bundles Python 3.15 (was 3.13), and no longer bundles
smbclient - Clone the repository and run
./tcapsule bootstrapon any Mac with macOS 12 or later, or on Linux. On a Mac, bootstrap installs nothing and no longer uses Homebrew: thesshthat comes with macOS is enough - Bootstrap checks that
sshis OpenSSH 8.4 or newer before it creates.venv. macOS has it from macOS 12 on; Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, RHEL 9 and later have it, Ubuntu 20.04 and RHEL 8 do not - Under a Python older than 3.9,
./tcapsulesays which Python it needs, instead of stopping with a syntax error
- Releases
- A release is built only after a clean dependency audit, along with the tests and the Intel Mac check
- The download page's button now gets the DMG: https://jamesyc.github.io/TimeCapsuleSMB/
