macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)

  • Download TimeCapsuleSMB.app.zip below
  • You can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
  • The app now updates itself. The macOS app now autoupdates.

What's Changed

  • Time Machine reliability
    • Fix backups failing with "Copy failed because of a problem on destination" (error -36) (#397). A macOS bug can cut a WRITE short and put the next requests inside its data (#221). v3.7.0 caught such a WRITE but then discarded everything after it, and macOS will not reconnect while some of those requests wait for an answer. Samba now refuses only the cut WRITE, answers the requests that follow it, then closes the connection, so the Mac reconnects and sends the WRITE again
    • Fix a 70-second wait when opening a file whose previous holder's connection had gone away while Samba was breaking its lease
  • Disks
    • Add "Wipe Internal Disk" under Maintenance. It deletes everything on the internal disk and formats it for the device, including disks AirPort Utility's "Erase Disk" cannot format (APFS, exFAT, NTFS, FAT32, Linux, or a partition table AirPort Utility cannot replace).
    • Detect volumes that AirPort Utility's "Erase Disk" left only in memory. They vanish at the next restart with everything saved on them, Time Machine backups included. Checkup reports it, and Install and other commands that restart the device stop and say to copy off your files first
    • Report a disk that has stopped responding, instead of blaming Apple's ACPd, which waits for the disk too. Say to unplug the device, and to replace the disk if it happens again
    • Report a disk the device sees as far smaller than it is
    • Checkup shows each disk's SMART status and how full each volume is (#393)
    • When fsck_hfs crashes, Disk Repair names the signal, and says to repair the volume on a Mac, since the device's checker crashes the same way again
    • Clearer, translated errors when a disk has no usable HFS volume. Recovery steps no longer warn that disks over 2 TB may not be detected; NetBSD 4 devices handle larger disks unless they are MBR-partitioned
  • Apple ACPd
    • When AirPort ACP (port 5009) times out but SSH answers, report a stuck ACPd and say to unplug the device, instead of blaming this Mac's network (#396)
    • When turning on SSH restarts the device and it does not come back within 10 minutes, say to unplug it: some devices stop partway through a restart, off the network, until they are unplugged. Also say so when the device comes back with SSH still off
  • macOS app
    • Automatic updates, with "Check for Updates..." in the app menu and a "Check for updates automatically" setting (#331, #364)
    • The device page shows the version installed on the device, and warns when it is older than the app's, so you know to run "Install / Update Samba" (#357)
    • Opening a device checks SSH and the installed version in the background; your own operations always go first
    • A language chosen in Settings also applies to the menus and update windows after you reopen the app
    • Adding a device that is already saved says so, and adding it by Manual Address updates the saved device's address when it has moved
    • The NetBSD 4 boot hook has its own Maintenance card, linked from Install
  • CLI
    • Learn of newer releases from the same update feed as the app
    • configure no longer reports the selected Bonjour record's model for a different host you typed (#395, by @mvanhorn)
    • On native Windows, exit at once and say to run on a Mac or Linux computer
  • Releases
    • Each release is now built, signed and notarized by GitHub Actions, and checked on an Intel Mac before it is published
    • New download page with a link to the latest release: https://jamesyc.github.io/TimeCapsuleSMB/
