macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)

TimeCapsuleSMB.app.zipbelow - You can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
What's Changed
- Time Machine speed and reliability
- Prefer HMAC-SHA256 signing and AES-CCM encryption, the fastest choices on the device's CPU, over AES-GMAC and AES-GCM (#390)
- Use ARM assembly for AES on NetBSD 4 little-endian devices, cutting Samba's CPU time for AES signing and encryption by about 35-40%
- Tune network buffers for faster reads: 224 KiB send and 384 KiB receive on NetBSD 4, and a send buffer that grows up to 2 MiB on NetBSD 6
- Fix Samba's lock directory (
/mnt/Locks) filling up, which made smbd fail opens and abort, and made Time Machine start new sparsebundles (#384, #385). These leaks come from upstream Samba; it now releases durable opens and leases left behind by smbds that crashed or were killed, and by failed reconnects.- As a safeguard, the lock directory grows from 4 MiB to 6 MiB, and if it still passes 4 MiB, the device restarts Samba with an empty lock directory. Macs reconnect as after a dropped connection
- Fix a crash in a durable reconnect when another open's byte-range lock is found
- Fix a kernel panic when many Macs use the device at once (#383).
- Check the copies of smbd and rsync in memory against checksums from the install, and copy a damaged one again instead of crashing at every start (#385). A problem with rsync no longer stops Samba
- Disks
- Report a disk that cannot read the Samba files, or reads them too slowly, as failing instead of damaged, with steps to copy off your files and replace the disk (#387)
- Warn before installing or running other operations on a disk with errors, and report it when Samba does not start because of it
- Apple ACPd
- Detect when Apple's AirPort service (ACPd) has quit, not only when it hangs. Checkup, Install, Activate and adding a device say to unplug the device, instead of waiting for a Samba that cannot start without ACPd
- Bonjour
- Announce the Time Machine (
_adisk) record again 5 and 20 minutes after the device starts, and have this Mac re-check its cached copy after an install. Time Machine on macOS 26 and later hides a Time Capsule whose cached record still advertises AFP
- Announce the Time Machine (
- Checkup
- Test this Mac's own
smbclientfirst, and report a broken one instead of failing the device's SMB checks - When smbd has waited minutes for a file lock, show which file and lock it is waiting on, and report the lock directory's free space
- Test this Mac's own
- macOS app
- Translate all error guidance and step titles into every language
- Show only the buttons an error box can act on, including Retry, and use one clear title for each error
- Show the Local Network access card when every attempt to reach AirPort ACP gets no route
- Say to run the install again when the connection drops in the middle of it
- Firmware tools show the health of both flash banks and whether the boot hook is installed, and name the active bank only when it is known
- Settings
- "Allow Any SMB Protocol" offers SMB1 again, with the NTLMv1 logins that many SMB1-only clients need, as Apple's firmware does. Leave it off unless an old client needs SMB1
