macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)
- Download
TimeCapsuleSMB.app.zipbelow - You can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
What's Changed
- Time Machine reliability
- Upgrade to Samba 4.25.0 (from 4.25.0rc2)
- Fix issue for new users, where Time Machine on older versions of macOS was failing to add the disk with "the network backup disk does not support the required capabilities" (error 7). Samba now grants the durable-handle timeout macOS asks for, while still keeping handles alive for 300 seconds (#381)
- New users should upgrade to v3.6.0 if they had issues with v3.5.0 or 3.4.0
- The issue was not caught in testing, as it does not affect already configured Time Machine backups; it was only triggered when you add new backup disks.
- Fix Time Machine failing to rename the new sparsebundle with "Permission denied" (
BACKUP_FAILED_DISK_IMAGE_NOT_CREATED). Macs can now rename folders that hold their own open files, as in Samba 4.22 and earlier. This is a workaround for upstream Samba bug 15926 (#381)
- Disks
- Report a disk that stops mounting. Checkup fails with steps to restart, unplug, run Disk Repair, or replace the disk
- Disk Repair shows each step as it runs and keeps
fsck_hfsrunning when the connection drops. It also refuses to start a second repair while one is still running, and says to keep the Time Capsule plugged in
- Metadata migration
- Skip files whose names are too long for Samba to open, and damaged or unusual
._files, instead of failing the migration. Install lists what it skipped and why - When the device cannot read a folder, name the folder and say to run Disk Repair, then Install / Update Samba again
- When migration fails, report how the migrator ended and what it skipped on volumes it had already finished
- Skip files whose names are too long for Samba to open, and damaged or unusual
- Apple ACPd hangs
- Detect a restart that never happened with a marker on the device's RAM disk instead of the kernel clock. This ends the wait about 2 minutes after the restart request instead of 10
- Before blaming this Mac (VPN, firewall) when it gets no answer from AirPort ACP (port 5009), check whether ACPd answers on the device itself
- Find AirPort ACP before asking to turn SSH on and restart the device
- Checkup
- Wait for the device to finish starting up and staging Samba before checking. Checks then report what they find instead of a generic "still starting up" result
- Detect a Mac plugged straight into the device's internet (WAN) port, and say to use Wi-Fi or a LAN port
- Pass the SMB share listing when the share table is correct, even if
smbclientexits with an error because its workgroup lookup failed
- macOS app
- Run the bundled Python inside the app's helper, so macOS asks for Local Network access for TimeCapsuleSMB instead of for "Python"
- Put quotes around button and section names in every language, and make the translations' form of address consistent
- Linux CLI
- Connect over SSH on Fedora, RHEL and their derivatives, whose OpenSSL refuses the SHA-1 signature the Time Capsule uses. Checkup checks that the needed config file is installed
