macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)
- Download
TimeCapsuleSMB.app.zipbelow - Can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
What's Changed
- Performance and hardening
- Faster SMB signing and encryption on NetBSD 6 devices
- Enable stack protection and additional compiler hardening for NetBSD 4 Samba
- Reduce the size of the NetBSD 4 service and rsync binaries
- Increase the durable-handle reopen wait from 10 to 90 seconds, allowing slow disks more time to finish closing the previous connection (#221)
- macOS reliability
- Fix crashes when starting local tools on Macs with VPN, network filter or proxy software installed (#371)
- Prevent background tools from keeping operation output open after a command finishes
- Keep failures to prevent idle sleep from interrupting device operations
- Device discovery and reconnection
- Find the device again when its IP address changes, including after a reboot, and continue the operation at its new address
- Identify the device by its AirPort MAC address and verify it before following a new address, avoiding changes to another AirPort that took its old IP
- The macOS app refreshes discovery when a saved address stops working and offers the device’s new address
- Record more useful diagnostics when a reboot times out, including connection errors and the computer’s network state
- Tell CLI users how to save the device’s new address after following an address change
- SSH and password handling
- Remove the
sshpassdependency. Password logins now use the system OpenSSH client with a built-in password helper - Require OpenSSH 8.4 or newer and report unsupported or broken local SSH clients before connecting
- Distinguish local SSH client failures from device connection and password problems
- Check the full AirPort admin password before operations that need it. The device’s SSH login only compares the first 8 characters, so a wrong password could otherwise pass
- Refuse unexpected key passphrase and password-change prompts instead of answering them with the device password
- Remove the
- CLI setup and diagnostics
- Show installation progress during bootstrap
- Skip automatic
smbclientinstallation on Intel Macs and point to the macOS app for SMB checks - Explain when a command needs input but stdin is closed, instead of showing a traceback
- Check local tools without requiring a configured device, and keep
--jsonoutput clean - Ignore normal Bonjour startup text and include unrecognized discovery lines in diagnostics
- Firmware downloads
- Reject incomplete downloads and preserve the cached Apple firmware catalog when a replacement is invalid
