There is now a macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)
- Download
TimeCapsuleSMB.app.zipbelow - Can use your old AFP backups, now fully supports native Apple metadata on HFS filesystem
What's Changed
- Faster installs!
- Reuse one SSH connection per device instead of logging in again for every command. In testing, NetBSD 6 deploys dropped from about 5 minutes to about 2 minutes, and
doctorruns in about half the time - Write to the device's slow flash storage only when a file actually changed, and in large blocks. In testing, NetBSD 4 deploys dropped from about 5.5 minutes to about 3

- Install reliability
- Fix deploys failing while choosing the disk to install to, after the firmware started a second copy of Apple's
diskd - Fix "Inconsistent saved metadata key coverage" deploy failures after the firmware renumbers disks
- Deploy now waits for a metadata migration that an interrupted install left running
- Start Samba and NetBIOS under the device's final name right away. This fixes NetBIOS name lookup timeouts in
doctorduring the first ~30 seconds after boot fscknow restarts file sharing on older NetBSD 4 devices after its reboot
- Fix deploys failing while choosing the disk to install to, after the firmware started a second copy of Apple's
- Device stability and performance improvements
- Fix the internal disk's idle and standby timers, which failed to apply while the disk was mounted (#360)
- Detect processes stuck in the kernel: the device logs and reports them, and
doctorlists them before its disk and SMB checks
- Device discovery and setup
- Reworked Bonjour discovery, with IPv4 and IPv6 found together
- Confirm a device's identity over SSH before saving it, and refuse to save when that doesn't match what the device advertises
- Keep Bonjour names exactly as Apple advertises them, including trailing spaces and special characters
- macOS app
- Show progress, as a file count, during metadata migration (also in the CLI)
- Show "Activation Needed" only when file sharing is actually stopped on a NetBSD 4 device, not for checkup warnings
- If the app quits during an operation, the helper now stops cleanly as if you had pressed Cancel
- Use the same Install / Update Samba labels everywhere
- Remove the obsolete "Repair xattrs" maintenance workflow and
tcapsule repair-xattrs. Deploy's metadata migration replaces them
