What's Changed

• Time Machine and file sharing fixes
  • Serve share names exactly as they are advertised, so Time Machine finds the share
  • Macs can open folders named Aux, CON or PRN (Samba name mangling is off)
  • Creating and deleting resource forks over SMB is fully validated
  • Fix file dates after 2038, and keep dates HFS cannot store in range instead of wrapping
  • NetBSD 4: list folders whose names contain mapped characters, and set file times on open files
  • Writes that would grow a file past the disk's free space are refused cleanly

  • Work around an Apple NetBSD kernel bug that could undo recent memory writes in Samba, the service and rsync
  • Faster large reads and writes (8 MiB SMB2 requests)
  • Fix aborted requests and durable-handle reconnects after a client drops or logs off
  • Symlinks: follow links in the middle of a path, map special characters in link targets, and never lose the original file if a conversion cannot be checked
• Upgrading from v2.x (metadata migration)
  • Mac metadata too large for a native HFS attribute is kept in legacy storage instead of failing the deploy, and deploy lists those files
  • Folder resource forks are kept, and ._ files whose names cannot exist are skipped
  • A deploy never overwrites metadata you changed since an earlier migration
  • Retry an SSH login macOS rejected instead of failing the migration
• NetBIOS and Bonjour
  • Register NetBIOS names another host defends, as Apple's firmware does
  • Start Samba only after the device hostname is set, and keep it mapped in /etc/hosts after a rename
• Deploy and doctor
  • Say why no disk was usable for the install: no USB disk, not mounted, unconfirmed or not writable
  • Only activate installs from the same major version, and explain why otherwise
  • Disk repair reports fsck_hfs failures instead of claiming success, and stops when the disk is still mounted
  • Doctor reports a missing or unmapped hostname, and no longer stops rsync clients or SSH sessions
• macOS app:
  • Every error screen and the kept-metadata report are translated
  • Counts are pluralized correctly in every language, with translation fixes for Portuguese and Russian
  • Show a failed checkup's counts in the app's language
