New look
- Redesigned with Material You: the app takes its colors from the system theme, in light or dark style (chosen in Settings).
- Bottom navigation bar instead of tabs at the top.
- New icons, dialogs and a reworked Settings screen.
- Sharper launcher icon and splash screen.
Articles
- Articles no longer flash in the default style before showing in the chosen one, and a dark-styled article no longer shows a bright flash while it loads.
- With the Auto article style and the dark interface style, a dictionary's night style now applies from its very first article.
- Text size is a slider instead of three zoom menu items.
- Full screen is exited with a button instead of a swipe, which conflicted with pulling down notifications.
- Articles switch to full screen automatically in landscape; this can be turned off in Settings.
- A scroll-to-top button for long articles.
- Smoother scrolling with the volume keys.
- Wikipedia, Wiktionary and other MediaWiki article links shared to Aard 2 open the article.
User styles
- User styles apply without a flash.
- Example user styles to use or adapt — a dark version of any dictionary, grayscale, and beige for MediaWiki-based dictionaries — are linked from the README.
Dictionaries, bookmarks and history
- Drag to reorder dictionaries.
- Swipe to remove dictionaries, bookmarks and history entries, with Undo.
- Dictionaries used for random articles are marked with a dice icon.
- Turning a dictionary on or off is faster when many dictionaries are open.
- History can be turned off.
- Keep more bookmarks and history: up to 1000 entries each, up from 100.
Other changes
- "Load remote content when on Wi-Fi" now means any network that isn't metered: it skips a mobile hotspot and respects networks marked as metered in system settings.
- New interface text is translated into all existing languages except Kabyle.
Removed
- Opening Wikipedia and Wiktionary links in Aard 2 directly from other apps. Since Android 12 it only worked after approving each domain in system settings, and it covered only a few languages. Share the link to Aard 2 instead.
- Support for the old Samsung multi-window mode (Android 6 and earlier); split screen works through standard Android support.
- The Clear cache setting; Android's app storage settings do the same.
Requirements
Android 6.0 or newer (previously 4.4).
