A small release, and an honest one: it fixes a placeholder that lied, and it
reports a measurement instead of shipping the change I had planned.
The hero placeholder no longer lies (#21)
In 1.0.25 I put a 400 ms ceiling on the wait for hero artwork, so the screen
would stop showing the previous title's art next to the new title's name.
That was right. What I did next was not: when the ceiling fired, the screen
read "Artwork unavailable" — while the artwork was still on its way.
I replaced one lie with another. Now the two states are told apart:
- "Loading artwork…" — the art is still arriving.
- "Artwork unavailable" — the title genuinely has no art.
The wait itself: measured, and that is why prefetch is NOT in this build
I said on #21 that I would measure before adding neighbour prefetch. Measured,
on an LG webOS 4 TV, fixed key path, warm cache:
[hero] espera 374 ms | n=1 media=374 pior=374 estouros=0
[hero] espera 188 ms | n=2 media=281 pior=374 estouros=0
[hero] espera 203 ms | n=3 media=255 pior=374 estouros=0
[hero] espera 98 ms | n=4 media=215 pior=374 estouros=0
FPS=59.9 janks=0 texturas=26 despejos=0
Average 215 ms, worst 374 ms, zero ceiling hits, zero texture
evictions. Prefetching the neighbouring heroes would cost roughly 8 MB per
1920-wide texture and, on a TV with this little headroom, would start evicting
the posters that are actually on screen. Paying that to shorten a 215 ms wait
would trade a defect this device does not have for one it would then have. So
prefetch stays out until there is a number that justifies it.
If the hero wait is bad on your TV, the [hero] espera line is in this
build — send it and it decides the question.
Also in the box
Everything from 1.0.21 through 1.0.25 is included: the episode watched menu
(this / up to here / whole season, both directions), Continue Watching removal
across all three sources, the home cache, the Settings rework, and the account
library.
