LibreMerge 1.0: binary comparison, WinMerge's path bar, and Qt 6.12

LibreMerge reaches 1.0. This release brings in WinMerge's binary comparison, with a hex editor written for LibreMerge, and the path bar WinMerge shows over every pane. Next and Previous Difference now go from the cursor, a file that a folder comparison has on one side only opens as in WinMerge, and the whole application moves to Qt 6.12.

Added

  • Binary comparison as in WinMerge. Binary files, and the files WinMerge's binary file patterns name, open as hex dumps side by side, 2-way or 3-way: each byte that differs is colored, Next and Previous Difference step through them, and the selected bytes or all of them copy across. The panes edit like the hex editor WinMerge embeds: overwrite or insert, by hex digit or by character, Cut, Copy, Paste and Delete with its dialogs, Find and Replace in Frhed's syntax, Go to offset, and one undo history for the panes. Options > Compare > Binary holds the patterns and the editor's settings (bytes per line, byte order, character set). The editor is LibreMerge's own: Frhed's license keeps its code out.
  • WinMerge's path bar over every pane, in the text, table, image and binary comparisons. Its ≡ menu copies the full path or the file name, edits the caption (F2) or the path in place (Ctrl+L, Command+L on the Mac), and opens another file, the clipboard or a recent file in that pane, asking first to save what changed.
  • Files on one side only (#12, thanks @hendev1): in a folder comparison, a file that one side lacks opens against an empty "Untitled" pane, in the comparison its type calls for, ready to take a copy and be saved under a name of your choice. In a 3-way folder comparison, every item opens with three panes.
  • Copy All asks first in the text, table and image comparisons too, as in WinMerge, and Options > Message Boxes keeps the answer.

Changed

  • Qt 6.12 on both platforms. On macOS the dmg now needs macOS 14.4 (Sonoma) or later; macOS 12 and 13 stay with LibreMerge 0.9.9. On Linux the AppImage carries Qt 6.12 built on Debian 12, so it still runs on any distribution with glibc 2.35+.
  • Linux: native Wayland. On a Wayland session the AppImage no longer goes through XWayland, now that Qt 6.12 places its dialogs over the window. QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb still asks for XWayland.
  • German: File > Recent Files or Folders reads "Kürzlich verwendet", and the hint of the path fields matches it, after the review by @KrokusPokus in #8. The item has its accelerator letter in every language, as in WinMerge.

Fixed

  • Next and Previous Difference ignored the cursor (#10, thanks @KrokusPokus). As in WinMerge, they go from the current difference only while it is on screen, and from the cursor otherwise; a click outside the current difference leaves none current, so a click by the difference you spotted takes the next step there. Copy to Right and Copy to Left take the difference the cursor is in. The table comparison does the same.

Downloads

  • macOS: universal dmg (Intel + Apple Silicon, macOS 14.4+), also brew install --cask iagodpassos/tap/libremerge
  • Linux: AppImage for x86_64 and arm64 (any distro with glibc 2.35+, nothing to install), also brew install --cask iagodpassos/tap/libremerge with Homebrew on Linux
