dumbtv home 1.2

A home screen for Fire TV: your apps, your HDMI inputs, a clock. Nothing else.

What's new in 1.2

Fixes

  • HOME works on Fire OS 8. Android 11 refused the launch because the launcher had no window on screen yet. The HOME hook now waits until its cover has drawn, then starts the home screen. Still no permission needed. Tested on two Fire OS 8 devices by their owners (#31, #49; fixes #8).
  • HDMI tiles switch input instead of opening Amazon's Live TV settings. The launcher has its own input screen, built on Android's public TvView: the picture, the input's name, "No signal" when nothing is plugged in. BACK and HOME work from it (#33; fixes #51, #63).
  • Options › Open inputs with › Automatic (new default): uses the TV's own app only when it can actually show the input, otherwise the launcher's input screen. Amazon's Live TV claims every input and then shows settings, so on Fire TV Edition televisions Automatic picks the launcher's screen. "The TV's app" and "dumbtv home" are still there if you want to force one.
  • One APK for Fire OS 6, 7 and 8. 2017–2018 Fire TV Sticks no longer need a JDK and a source build (#19).
  • Fire OS 6: the keeper never moves a task that is being closed, which made a finished screen come back after HOME (#47).
  • Wallpapers: wallpaper.jpeg now works too, and Options says plainly that a single image must be named wallpaper.jpg/.png, while files in wallpapers/ can have any name (#28).

New, all optional (Options)

  • Grid layout: apps wrap into lines instead of one long row (#38).
  • Adaptive solid background: the screen takes the colour of the focused app (#17).
  • Adaptive wallpaper tint: your wallpaper stays, with a light wash of the focused app's colour (#18).

Same release, outside the launcher

  • The DNS filter's list rebuild no longer ends in an error on big lists (#15), and its permission and settings are saved before the reboot (#16).
  • Fire OS 8 manual DNS step: the file address needs three slashes, file:///storage/... (#64).
  • New opt-out FILTER_AUTOSTART=0 in dumbtv.conf for TVs where the filter's tunnel is up but DNS goes around it (#58).
  • Debloat no longer switches off Prime Video (com.amazon.firebat), and restore.sh turns it back on where an older run did (#52).
  • Debloat reports packages Fire OS already disabled instead of stopping on them (#24); misdetection of install-existing fixed (#27); downloads retry when GitHub resets the connection (#40); typos in the keep list are caught early (#25).
  • The scripts now stop cleanly on Fire OS 5 instead of trying and rebooting (#42), and lockdown.sh no longer fails on a missing package (#15).
  • One more Alexa address blocked; com.amazon.device.messaging added to the never-disable list after it hung a 2025 Fire TV at boot (#57).
  • 23 device reports in catalog/devices/ from people who ran dumbtv on their TVs.

Facts

  • 54 KB, plain Java, no libraries
  • No internet permission, no advertising ID
  • Fire OS 7/8: no permissions at all. Fire OS 6: usage access, boot and task order, which the keeper needs there. Each is capped at maxSdkVersion 27, so newer Fire OS never sees them. Check: aapt2 dump permissions dumbtv-home.apk
  • Signed with the same key as 1.0 and 1.1, so it installs over them and keeps your settings

Install or update

git clone https://github.com/humblemuzzu/dumbtv.git && cd dumbtv # or: git pull
adb connect <tv-ip>:5555
./launcher/install.sh

install.sh downloads dumbtv-home.apk from this release, checks its SHA-256 against launcher/version.env, installs it and sets up the HOME takeover. Undo with ./launcher/install.sh --undo.

Tested on an Onida Fire TV Edition television, Fire OS 7.7.1.7: HOME 6 out of 6 from SmartTube and VLC, HDMI tiles open the input screen, grid and both adaptive backgrounds, wallpaper naming, and verify.sh all checks passed. Fire OS 8 HOME was tested by its contributors on an AFTOLCBC82 television and an AFTKRT stick.
