Added
- The launcher finds the game package even when
api.github.comis blocked (issue #20). If the release server's API cannot be reached (no connection, a rate limit or an HTTP error), the launcher reads the latest release'smanifest.jsonthrough github.com's own download redirect and downloads the game package from the release's github.com asset address, so a network that blocks only the API host now works by itself. - Plain messages when the launcher cannot reach GitHub. With no game files yet, Home says under PLAY that the game program was not downloaded because GitHub can't be reached, and the update banner and step 1 of Install say the same. A new By hand link on step 1 opens a short guide: download the game zip and
manifest.jsonfrom the release page into one folder, keep their names, and choose the zip. - Headlight flash works. Holding HEADLIGHTS (Y / Triangle, or its keyboard binding) used to do nothing to the car. It now flashes the high beams, lights the street with twice the strength and a wider cone at night, and plays the HIGHBEAMS_ON / HIGHBEAMS_OFF sounds, as the original does.
- Police light bars as the original's. The domes are drawn blended over the lit lenses, so the spinning lenses shine through, and the light bar glows without the star shape the port added.
Fixed
- Roaming street racers no longer stand under the road (issues #17 and #19). A cruising racer far from you was posed under the road on crests and dips (up to 2.6 m), so you saw him below the street and could not flash him. He now stands on the ground under his line point, tilted with the road.
- The slowdown that grows over a session of races is fixed (issues #17 and #19). A knocked prop that fell through the ground kept a body in the simulation for the rest of the session and every car step tested against it. The original drops such props below -300 m; the port now does too (awake bodies 29 to 0 on the downtown circuit, the collision step 1.0 - 1.15 ms down to 0.17 - 0.27 ms a tick).
- Police chases and scenes follow the original's rules more closely (issue #17, from the retest of v0.9.0):
- The arrest timer grows only while a tactic cop is near and you are slow and seen, and holds otherwise.
- A damaged-out target is busted at once, and a target burning out or barely moving next to a cop for 5 seconds is busted too.
- A downed biker is busted at once.
- The pull-over score stops at 599 while it runs.
- The arrest scene runs before the ARRESTED form opens, with the pursuit time kept.
- The pull-over and arrest scenes are placed on the arrest safe zones or the kerb lane of the nearest road, upright.
- The throttle alone bolts from a pull-over.
- The arrest officers get their faces from their own set.
- The ticket scene's reaction plays.
- Car badges look like the original's (issue #14). The 240SX's letters are drawn blended and outlined with the bump-mapped mirror shading (a bevel with a light top and a dark lower edge), not as a solid cut-out.
Known issues
This is still an early release. Expect bugs; please report problems on GitHub.
Update
- This update changes the game program and the launcher; the install data version is unchanged, so there is no rebuild offered. An install built before 0.5.0 has no pond water shader file yet, and the fountain basins and ponds keep their generic look until the game data is built again.
- If something goes wrong, Export Logs on the Support tab, and Settings > General can go back to the previous game version.
Game
- Not everything on the police list is done yet: how easily you get pulled over, how the cops ram, busted scenes (guns, your character's hands) and a few more are still being worked through (issue #17).
- The white paint on some AMD drivers (issue #14) and the frame rate on RTX 50-series cards (issue #12) have not been confirmed on the machines that showed them. DirectX 12 has been tried on very few machines, and its first start takes a few minutes while shaders compile.
- Mods are being implemented slowly and are not ready to use.
- The pad and rumble fixes have not been tried with a real pad here (PS4 pad especially), and the sound fix has not been confirmed on the machine that had no sound.
- The GT-R's tuning, sound and cameras are borrowed from other cars, because the disc has none of its own.
- Some sounds are approximations: the opponents' engine blend uses speed only, the traffic's obstacle, lane-limit and emergency-brake sounds are stand-ins, the junction warning follows the port's signalled junctions, the wipeout loops follow the port's wipeout flag, and the air-ride sounds are not played.
- Delivery and garage icons on the minimap are in the wrong place or have the wrong design.
- South Central's two hangout entries are not armed, and the rear-view mirror is an option that you have to switch on.
- Gear shifts at the start of a race can look delayed.
- Two-wheel-drive cars pull slightly harder than they should. Some bike behaviours (stoppie, burnout), some particle effects and parts of the pedestrian behaviour are approximations.
- The far city and a few places at dusk and dawn differ slightly from the original.
- Online play is not available.
Settings and extras not available yet
- The launcher shows the display and performance options, but the game reads
settings.tomlwhen it starts; changes in the game's OPTIONS pages are applied at once and saved. Ultrawide handling and upscaling are not available. Fullscreen has been tried on one machine only (on DX12 it runs borderless), and choosing a second monitor has not been tried. - Custom music (including Spotify), controller adaptive triggers and racing wheels are not available. The launcher's Music tab is a locked preview.
Launcher
- Windows only for now. Linux and macOS are planned and only compile-checked.
- It is not code-signed, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info, then Run anyway, after checking the SHA-256 below.
- It needs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime (built into Windows 11 and current Windows 10) and about 14 GB of free space for the game data, plus the disc image itself.
- Only the Xbox 360 Complete Edition (USA, Europe) disc image is supported. PS3 saves can only be imported from the US release.
- The fallback through github.com has not been tried on a network that really blocks the API host. The Gamepad tab is read-only and does not show the layout yet. Only English is available.
Install and update
New here? Download RustyMCLA.exe, put it in a folder of its own and start it; it walks you through the setup. You need your own disc image of the Xbox 360 version of the game (Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Complete Edition). Nothing of the game is included.
Already installed? The launcher offers this update by itself. You can always skip it.
