Mods

  • Manufacturer mods and a driver toggle for mod cars. A mod can declare new car makers (name, optional logo, can be on fire); the garage's maker logo now follows each car's manufacturer instead of its folder letters.
  • Rim mods. A mod can bring rims that fit any car, in its own zip or inside a car mod; they join a disc brand's tab or a new brand's tab, with the mod's logo or the brand name. A rim without a price costs the median of its tab.
  • The R8 (SAMPLE) mod. mcla-tool mods-sample packs the disc R8 from your own install as a sample mod; no game files are distributed.
  • Car pictures for the mod tools: mcla.exe --car-picture <car> --out <png> draws one car alone on a transparent background (showroom or side view).

Garage and cars

  • NO PLATE. The LICENSE PLATES editor can hide a car's plate (Y switches HIDE PLATE / SHOW PLATE), for every car, disc or mod, everywhere it is drawn.
  • The wheels blur as the original's (issue #14): the blur discs, the tyres' smear as they turn, their shadows, and the blur for cars under Stealth and for bikes.
  • The tyres look as the original's: the lettering faces out on every wheel, the side walls bulge, the bead meets the rim per axle and the rims take their axle's size, and a bike's tyre and rim are sized per axle from the bike's own bones. Set-up cars cull back faces as the original does.
  • A car bought in the game wears its own rims, not the last car's, and the police cruiser and the city bus are not for sale, as in the original (issues #36 and #37).

Map and ARCADE

  • ARCADE's VIEW RACE as in the original: Y on the race list or the options page flies the map camera up over the city, with zoom, PAN and MAP MODE, and back down. ARCADE opens with the original's map flight, its INFORMATION box is the navsys movie's own panel, and the race rows show their district icons.
  • GPS map on the pad: RT / LT zoom and the right stick pans.
  • The race opponents are back on the minimap in ordinary and tournament races, and story races show opponent arrows unless their script puts none on the map.
  • NEXT DELIVERY takes a random unused delivery, as the delivery script does.

Sound

  • Ambience as the original's: each district starts its own mixer scene and second bed, hangouts play their own ambience, the reverb follows the ground (tunnels, freeways, interiors and the mall), a district switch waits 4 s and fades, the ambience goes quiet with its categories, and the city ambience fades out with speed (50 to 160 mph).
  • Voices go through the original's filters and reverb buses, and each car's engine runs through its waveshaper chain.
  • The song changes on a race start and on RESTART RACE, as in the original (issue #10).
  • The listener turns with the camera in the chase views (issue #29): positional sounds, the engine included, no longer go round your head as the car turns.

Police

  • The telephone challenge runs end to end (issue #17): the first call's Back, the caller's greeting and car, and a list opened after the call has gone starts no race.
  • Your police car plays its siren with its light bar (HEADLIGHTS toggles it) (issue #36).
  • The pull-over's stop and the police station's restart face along the road, and after the restart the car stands in first through the engine's crank instead of driving off backwards (issue #38).

Fixed

  • Deep water damages the car (issue #36). Driving into deep water costs damage, the sea kills the car at once, and a damaged-out car comes back out of the water. A damaged-out car brakes fully at full lock, a wiped-out car keeps its pedals, and a car damaged out in the sea no longer dives onto its nose when it brakes.
  • Busted no longer revs the car in reverse (issue #38). The car is held only from the arrest scene's deactivate to its activate, as in the original.
  • The Crenshaw Plaza mall's corridor has its ceiling again (issue #37): city faces are culled by their winding, as the original's rasteriser does.
  • RED LIGHT RACING and BIRD ON THE LINE can be completed (issue #34). The red light mission threw a win away, and flashing a story series' man started a random local race; he now starts his series (2 of 3, 3 of 5). A series has to be won in one go, as in the original.
  • A tournament no longer crashes at the start of its next race. The cop zone picked for one race stayed for the next.
  • Fullscreen on Vulkan falls back to borderless instead of ending at the error box when the exclusive window's swap chain cannot be made (issue #33).
  • Signal and lamp glows no longer vanish when the car faces away from the camera's old direction (issue #29).
  • No green patch on the tyres, and the wheels no longer vanish when a race ends while the automatic test driver puts the car back.
  • Many routines are checked against the original's own code run offline, and the save tests no longer depend on their order.

Known issues

This is still an early release. Expect bugs; please report problems on GitHub.

Update

  • This update changes the game program and the launcher's Mods page; the install data version is unchanged, so there is no rebuild offered. An install built before 0.5.0 has no pond water shader file yet, and the fountain basins and ponds keep their generic look until the game data is built again.
  • If something goes wrong, Export Logs on the Support tab, and Settings > General can go back to the previous game version.

Game

  • Not everything on the police list is done yet: how easily you get pulled over, how the cops ram and parts of the busted scenes are still being worked through.
  • The pad's stick dead zone and the map's pad zoom and pan have not been tried with a real pad here.
  • DirectX 12 has been tried on very few machines, and its first start takes a few minutes while shaders compile.
  • Mods are being implemented slowly; the mod tools are not released yet.
  • The pad and rumble fixes have not been tried with a real pad here (PS4 pad especially), and the sound fix has not been confirmed on the machine that had no sound.
  • The GT-R's tuning, sound and cameras are borrowed from other cars, because the disc has none of its own.
  • Some sounds are approximations: the opponents' engine blend uses speed only, the traffic's obstacle, lane-limit and emergency-brake sounds are stand-ins, the junction warning follows the port's signalled junctions, the wipeout loops follow the port's wipeout flag, and the air-ride sounds are not played.
  • Delivery and garage icons on the minimap are in the wrong place or have the wrong design.
  • South Central's two hangout entries are not armed, and the rear-view mirror is an option that you have to switch on.
  • Gear shifts at the start of a race can look delayed.
  • Two-wheel-drive cars pull slightly harder than they should. Some bike behaviours (stoppie, burnout), some particle effects and parts of the pedestrian behaviour are approximations.
  • The far city and a few places at dusk and dawn differ slightly from the original.
  • Online play is not available.

Settings and extras not available yet

  • The launcher shows the display and performance options, but the game reads settings.toml when it starts; changes in the game's OPTIONS pages are applied at once and saved. Ultrawide handling and upscaling are not available. Fullscreen has been tried on one machine only (on DX12 it runs borderless), and choosing a second monitor has not been tried.
  • Custom music (including Spotify), controller adaptive triggers and racing wheels are not available. The launcher's Music tab is a locked preview.

Launcher

  • Windows only for now. Linux and macOS are planned and only compile-checked.
  • It is not code-signed, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info, then Run anyway, after checking the SHA-256 below.
  • It needs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime (built into Windows 11 and current Windows 10) and about 14 GB of free space for the game data, plus the disc image itself.
  • Only the Xbox 360 Complete Edition (USA, Europe) disc image is supported. PS3 saves can only be imported from the US release.
  • The launcher's fallback through github.com has not been tried on a network that really blocks the API host. The Gamepad tab is read-only and does not show the layout yet. Only English is available.

Install and update

New here? Download RustyMCLA.exe, put it in a folder of its own and start it; it walks you through the setup. You need your own disc image of the Xbox 360 version of the game (Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Complete Edition). Nothing of the game is included.

Already installed? The launcher offers this update by itself. You can always skip it.

The launcher is not code-signed, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info, then Run anyway, after comparing the SHA-256 below with your download.
