LibreELEC Hades 1.0 RC8

LibreELEC Hades 1.0 RC8 is an update that fixes faults found in 1.0 RC7 and adds a few smaller things. 1.0 RC7 came out earlier the same day and 1.0 RC6 the day before; if you missed them, what they brought is at the end. Every change, with the reason for it, is in the changelog.

Fixes

  • HDR10 upright with NVIDIA's driver 580 (GeForce GTX 900 and GTX 10 cards, TITAN V; issue #17): in 1.0 RC7, HDR video on these cards went out upside down, menus and subtitles too.
  • No GRUB error after an update (issue #17): an update with the .tar now also replaces the GRUB of the boot partition, so a drive installed before 1.0 RC6 no longer says "can't find command `['" at each start.
  • Seeking and the arrows during a Blu-ray played with its menus (issue #1): a Blu-ray with Java menus no longer takes every key for the whole film, so seeking, the arrows and the player information work again. Its menus still get the keys while they are on screen.
  • The thin text of Blu-ray menus is no longer faint (issue #1): at 3840x2160 the graphics of a disc keep their pixels, as the disc drew them, in place of being blurred into their neighbours.

Smaller things

  • HDR at 10 bits over HDMI on GeForce GTX 10 cards and the TITAN V, as an option (issue #17). Over HDMI, driver 580 sends RGB at 8 bits at most on these cards, whatever the TV takes. They do drive YCbCr 4:2:2 at 10 bits: turn on System > Display > HDR at more than 8 bits where the card sends RGB at 8 (NVIDIA), and HDR goes out that way where the TV takes it, from the next video. The same setting turns on the 12 bits of the GeForce GTX 16 and RTX 20 graphics, which needed a kernel parameter until now. It is off until it is confirmed on those cards, so reports are very welcome.
  • How long the boot menu waits: LibreELEC Settings > System > Boot menu sets 10 seconds (the default), 3 or 1, on UEFI and BIOS computers alike (issue #17).
  • Up to date: LibreELEC (NSS 3.133, LLVM 23.1.5, HarfBuzz 15.1.0, lz4 1.11.0, hwdata 0.413) and the Piers branch of Kodi, whose one new commit keeps the clock of the display running through a change of mode, so a video that switches the TV to HDR as it starts stays paced by the display.

Tested

Each change of 1.0 RC8 was tested on the host, with the code that the image runs, and the changelog says how for each item; none of them has been seen on the hardware it is for yet. Reports with the diagnostic switch on confirm them.

Before you update

  • An update in place replaces the GRUB programs of the boot partition with those of the new system, as it already changed the GRUB menu in 1.0 RC7 (the menu of before is kept as EFI/BOOT/grub.cfg.old).
  • With Use limited colour range (16-235) on and NVIDIA graphics, the TV loses its signal for a moment when Kodi starts, when the setting changes, and when Dolby Vision starts or ends at the same refresh rate.

Install or update

  • New install: write the .img.gz to a USB drive with LibreELEC-Hades-Installer.exe (Windows) or any disk image writer, and boot from it. The installer can also install to a secondary internal disk without erasing it. Secure Boot must be off.
  • Update: use "Update" in the installer, or copy the .tar to the Update folder of a drive with Hades and restart. Settings, add-ons and diagnostics are kept.

Dolby Vision needs an exact HDMI signal: turn off variable refresh rate and the colour adjustments of the graphics driver.

Thanks

What is new in this version is written for Hades, apart from the updates of LibreELEC and Kodi, which keep their authors. Thanks to sat4all1-dev and roronoazoro-blip for their reports and photos, to everyone who reported and tested 1.0 RC6 and 1.0 RC7, and to the LibreELEC and Kodi teams.

This is not LibreELEC and it is not official: report problems here, not to LibreELEC or Kodi. There is no warranty.

If you missed 1.0 RC7

1.0 RC7 came out earlier the same day. In short, it brought:

  • Fixes: a film no longer ends when its drive stops answering for a while (issue #16); limited colour range on NVIDIA right from the start (issue #17); the outputs that carry the sound stay on, and a file names more outputs to keep on, from the patch of harment (issue #11); each UEFI boot entry starts the kernel of its own drive (issue #14); a Blu-ray played with its menus keeps its seamless joins; level 5 offsets that do not fit the picture are left aside.
  • Smaller things: "Dolby Vision as HDR10+" for one video, next to "Dolby Vision as HDR10" (issue #16); the output depth during native Dolby Vision; 10-bit buffers of Kodi's own with NVIDIA's driver 580 (over HDMI, see the option above); Dolby Vision decoded by the processor, AV1 included, goes out natively; an empty /opt for Entware (issue #11); diagnostics that name the USB controllers and every disk (issue #16); Kodi Piers and LibreELEC up to date.

If you missed 1.0 RC6

1.0 RC6 came out the day before. In short, it brought:

  • Dolby Vision and HDR: the Dolby Vision output of a video applied while it plays, also for HDR10 and HDR10+, and kept for each file; Dolby Vision or HDR10+ for a video that has both, as a choice; the content mapping v4.0 as a setting; options for projectors and displays that map HDR their own way; HDR10 as Dolby Vision on Intel graphics of display version 9; HDR10+ and Dolby Vision measured where their metadata say nothing; menus over Dolby Vision that cost less GPU time (issue #12); Dolby Vision after a long delay after a change of refresh rate; two tracks a constant apart paired; a more exact IPT tunnel; HDR that ends after a video even when the driver refuses the change of mode.
  • Displays and HDMI: a TV switched off and on gets its picture back (issue #11); hot-plug, source type and background fixes for Intel and AMD, from the kernel patches of big-fella in YBLOD 0.3.3; limited colour range compressed once, by the driver; on NVIDIA, Dolby Vision in the modes named by their HDMI VIC (issue #4) and three buffers for Kodi's window; a refused change of mode asked for again; whole-number multiples of the frame rate, as an option; an EDID with an extension block that is not valid.
  • Subtitles and files: picture subtitles resized, moved and dimmed, from the pull request 29060 of cinemaONE to Kodi; text subtitles after a seek; subtitles moved by hand no longer moved back by the debug information (ctrl+shift+o); Matroska editions, as an option; a picture with a damaged timestamp no longer stops playback.
  • Sound: more of the sound in the player information, and why a stream does not pass through in kodi.log; Dolby Digital fixes (one of FFmpeg, by Jun Zhao); dialogue normalisation at 0 dB in passthrough, the dynamic range compression of Dolby Digital and the downmix settings that Kodi lacks; audio settings that apply during playback.
  • Interface, library and CEC: a dialog that does not finish closing no longer leaves Kodi ignoring the remote (issue #11); the settings window no longer saves the mode of a video as the resolution of the interface; only what changes is drawn again when the focus moves in a list (Markus Härer, from the master of Kodi); FEL told from MEL in the library, and skins made for the CoreELEC builds show their values; CEC with a Pulse-Eight adapter fixed (from the CoreELEC tree of pannal, by CoreELEC, pannal and Stuart Marks, and one fix of Hades).
  • Blu-ray: one timeline across the seamless joins of a playlist played directly; menus kept apart from subtitles (78andyp, in the master of Kodi); a 3D display simulated, as an option; 3D subtitles at their depth; movies on discs in the library (78andyp, olympia); Java (BD-J) menus with nothing to install, in a service of the system that isolates them (the idea comes from the build of CroqueMr; the service is written for Hades); BD-J fixes in libbluray from Daniel Oberlin and SamuriHL; BD-Live as an option, Internet only.
  • Boot, diagnostics and safety: a new boot menu drawn for LibreELEC Hades, the eclipse of its mark on black and four entries, each with a line that says what it does, Run first and started by itself after 10 s; the notice of several displays as a picture on the start screen; diagnostics that filter more of what is personal and keep the journal of the start before; a firewall no longer left open by a configuration it does not understand.
  • Licence and updates: the Dolby Vision module of Kodi (tools/dvbridge) under GPL-2.0-or-later; Linux 7.3.1 with 47 fixes queued for 7.3.2; LibreELEC, Kodi, libplacebo and FFmpeg up to date; and fixes in expat, libarchive, nghttp2, OpenSSL, curl, OpenSSH, BlueZ, glibc, Python, iptables and libdrm.

Several features of 1.0 RC6 and 1.0 RC7 follow ideas from the build of CroqueMr, from the CoreELEC builds of pannal (p3i), avdvplus and SamuriHL, from the design of matthane for Blu-ray playlists, from YBLOD (dangerouslaser, big-fella) and from Sebastiii, written anew here; the changelog names them item by item.
