LibreELEC Hades 1.0 RC6 applies the Dolby Vision output of a video while it plays, gives projectors and displays that map HDR their own way their own choices, and brings back the picture of a TV that is switched off and on in HDMI modes above 340 MHz and on FRL. Limited colour range is compressed once, by the driver, NVIDIA sends Dolby Vision in the modes it names by their HDMI VIC, picture subtitles can be resized and moved, text subtitles come back after a seek, and Matroska editions can be chosen. A new boot menu explains each of its entries, Blu-ray playlists keep one timeline across their joins, and the Java menus of a disc play with nothing to install. Every change of this version, with the reason for it, is in the changelog.
Dolby Vision and HDR
- Dolby Vision output (this video) applies while the video plays, also for HDR10 and HDR10+ videos, and is kept for each file. Only the video stream is opened again and the sound plays on. A button of the video OSD and
PlayerControl(HadesDVOutput)open the same choice. - Dolby Vision and HDR10+ in one video, as a choice: for a video that carries both, on a display that takes both, HDR10+ can be sent instead of Dolby Vision.
- The content mapping v4.0 of Dolby Vision, as a setting, with "Version 2.9 only" for a TV that shows a black or wrong picture with v4.0.
- For projectors and displays that map HDR their own way (options, off by default): Dolby Vision Low-Latency also to a TV that takes Standard, mapped to a peak, colours and black set by hand; a limit on the luminance that the HDR10 InfoFrame tells the display; and HDR10 and HDR10+ adapted to the peak of the display in the player.
- HDR10 on Intel graphics of display version 9 (HD and UHD 6xx) goes out as Dolby Vision where the TV takes it, since that port cannot send HDR10.
- HDR10+ sent as Dolby Vision measures what its metadata do not say, and Dolby Vision sent as HDR10+ carries DistributionY99 and DistributionY100nit.
- Menus over Dolby Vision cost less GPU time on weaker graphics (issue #12), with the same bytes, measured with the software bridge.
- Dolby Vision after a long Delay after change of refresh rate: the Dolby Vision signal of a video waits for it from the moment the display is back, and no longer from the change of mode, which a long delay used up.
- Dolby Vision in two tracks whose times are a constant apart is now paired, with the distance learnt from the file.
- The IPT tunnel, which carries profiles 7 and 8 by default, is more exact: at most one code from a computation in 64-bit floats in at most 0.04 % of the samples, where up to 3.6 % were. Measured with the software bridge.
- HDR ends after a video even when the driver refuses it together with a change of resolution.
Displays and HDMI
- A TV that is switched off and on gets its picture back in an HDMI mode above 340 MHz or one that goes by FRL (issue #11).
- Intel and AMD: a TV that drops its hot-plug signal for a moment is not reported as unplugged; Intel tells the TV that the source is a player; on AMD Ryzen with Vega graphics the bars of a film in YCbCr are black and not green. From the kernel patches of big-fella in YBLOD 0.3.3.
- Limited colour range is compressed once, by the driver, on Intel, AMD and NVIDIA: no more raised blacks.
- NVIDIA: Dolby Vision in the modes that the driver names by their HDMI VIC (issue #4), also with driver 580; three buffers for the window of Kodi; an HDMI port that runs through a DisplayPort output takes a change of resolution whole.
- A change of mode that the driver refused is asked for again.
- Whole-number multiples of the frame rate (option under the whitelist, off by default): 23.976 fps at 119.88 Hz, 24 fps at 120 Hz, 25 fps at 100 Hz, without a change of mode.
- An EDID with an extension block that is not valid: that block is skipped and copies of the Dolby Vision block count as one, in Kodi and in the kernel; on Intel, HDR10+ is read from the whole EDID.
Subtitles and files
- Picture subtitles can be resized, moved and dimmed (PGS and VobSub), for example into the picture of a 2.39:1 film, from the pull request 29060 of cinemaONE to Kodi; their brightness is the same on SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
- Text subtitles after a seek: the line that is on screen at the target of a seek is shown there, instead of being lost until the next line.
- The debug information of the player (ctrl+shift+o) no longer moves subtitles back after they were moved by hand.
- Editions of Matroska files (option, off by default): a file with several cuts of a film asks which one to play.
- A picture with a damaged timestamp no longer stops playback.
Sound
- The player information says more of the sound: the bed and objects of Dolby Atmos, the dialogue normalisation ("Dialogue level" for AC-3 and E-AC-3, "Dialogue gain" for DTS), and the layout of a stream that is passed through.
kodi.logsays whether the sound of a stream passes through, and why not. - Dolby Digital: a seek no longer turns off its dynamic range compression (a fix of FFmpeg by Jun Zhao), and a block of 256 samples is no longer spoiled once in a stream.
- Dialogue normalisation at 0 dB in passthrough (option, off by default), dynamic range compression of Dolby Digital and the downmix settings that Kodi lacks in System > Audio, and audio settings changed during playback apply at once.
Interface
- A dialog that does not finish closing no longer leaves Kodi ignoring the remote and the keyboard (issue #11): 3 s after the first action it drops, it is closed.
- While a video plays, the settings window no longer saves the mode of the video as the resolution of the interface.
- Only the items that change are drawn again when the focus moves in a list (Markus Härer, from the master of Kodi), and making a file a version or an extra of a video no longer holds the interface.
Library, CEC and skins
- The library tells FEL from MEL by the rule that draws them, and skins made for the CoreELEC builds show their values.
- CEC with a Pulse-Eight adapter: Hades no longer takes the TV input back after you switch to another device, and an AV receiver no longer wakes the TV. Fixes from the CoreELEC of pannal (p3i), by CoreELEC, pannal and Stuart Marks, and one of Hades.
Blu-ray
- Blu-ray playlists played directly keep one timeline across their seamless joins: a film whose playlist joins clips timed apart no longer freezes, drops pictures or pauses its passthrough audio at each join.
- Blu-ray menus are kept apart from subtitles, so that changing the subtitles no longer takes a menu away (78andyp, in the master of Kodi).
- Simulate a 3D display (option, off by default), for Blu-ray 3D discs that stop on a black screen on a display without 3D: the film plays in 2D.
- 3D subtitles keep their depth, and the menus of a 3D disc are no longer moved by it.
- Movies on discs in the library are no longer deleted when their disc is scanned again, and the discs of a movie are one movie (78andyp, olympia).
- Java (BD-J) menus with nothing to install: the Java menus of a disc now run in the BD-J service of the system, never in Kodi: a process for each disc, started by the system under a user of its own, without privileges, with a filter of system calls and no network, which reads the disc only through Kodi and ends with it. The Java runtime comes with the system (OpenJDK 27, built for the image), so the add-on "JRE for BD-J menus" is no longer used. Where the menus cannot run, the main title plays and a notification says why. The idea of Java menus with nothing to install comes from CroqueMr's build; the service that isolates them is written for Hades. Tested on the host with discs made for the tests; not tried with a commercial disc yet.
- BD-J menus that play as their discs expect, with fixes in libbluray from Daniel Oberlin (discs with BD+ that stayed black, a JAR whose signature cannot be verified) and from SamuriHL (2160p video, the streams of a play item, the language choice, the HAVi background, the timing the disc is told).
- BD-Live, as an option (off by default): the Java menus of a disc reach the Internet and only the Internet, never this system or your home network, with every name and connection in
kodi.log. Off, the disc has no network at all.
Boot
- A new boot menu. Instead of the text menu, the boot menu is drawn for LibreELEC Hades: the eclipse of its mark large on the right, on black, and in a column on the left the four entries, each with a line that says what it does: Run (recommended: the normal start, with the other NVMe and SATA disks of the computer hidden), Run (internal disks read-only), Live (settings and add-ons kept in memory only, gone at power off) and Installer (installs on a disk you choose, erasing it, after asking twice). Run is first and starts by itself after 10 s, with a countdown. In UEFI it is drawn in the mode that the screen is already in, from 1024x768 to 3840x2160; in BIOS it has the same look at 1024x768.
- The start screen leaves room for a notice: the mark and the name stand a little higher, and where several displays are connected, the notice that Kodi uses one of them is now a picture on the start screen, in English and in Spanish, instead of text on a black screen.
Diagnostics and safety
- The diagnostics filter more of what is personal: the names of drives, shares, folders and files become markers, and the structure of a disc is kept. With the switch on, the journal of the start before is kept too.
- The firewall is no longer left open by a configuration it does not understand: it gets the rules of a home network, and the journal says so.
Licence
The Dolby Vision module of Kodi (tools/dvbridge) is now GPL-2.0-or-later, all 42 of its files, with its parts that came from other code written again from the public specifications, the same bytes and decisions. The README and the NOTICE name the licence of each file.
Up to date and safer
Linux 7.3.1 with 47 fixes queued for 7.3.2 (14 known security issues among them); LibreELEC at its latest commit; the Piers branch of Kodi (among its fixes, accurate seeks, the commercial breaks of EDL files skipped by the latency of the display, and embedded subtitles shown without a seek back) and 15 commits of its master; libplacebo, FFmpeg with the fixes of its 9.0 branch and of five known security issues in its decoders; expat 2.10.0, libarchive 3.8.11, nghttp2 1.71.0; and fixes after their releases in OpenSSL, curl, OpenSSH, BlueZ, glibc, Python, iptables and libdrm.
Tested
What earlier versions showed working on the author's hardware is in the README. What is new in RC6 has not been tried on hardware yet: it is built, reviewed and tested on the host and in virtual machines; the changelog says how each item was tested. Your reports, with the diagnostic switch on, are what confirms it.
Before you update
- The add-on "JRE for BD-J menus" is no longer used, and what discs saved with it is not carried over.
- With Use limited colour range on, the driver now compresses the picture and Kodi draws full range: blacks that were raised are now right. Turning the setting on or off sets the picture of the TV up again (a moment of black).
- On NVIDIA, the window of Kodi takes one more picture of graphics memory (33 MB at 4K).
Install or update
- New install: write the
.img.gzto a USB drive withLibreELEC-Hades-Installer.exe(Windows) or any disk image writer, and boot from it. The installer can also install to a secondary internal disk without erasing it. Secure Boot must be off. - Update: use "Update" in the installer, or copy the
.tarto theUpdatefolder of a drive with Hades and restart. Settings, add-ons and diagnostics are kept.
Dolby Vision needs an exact HDMI signal: turn off variable refresh rate and the colour adjustments of the graphics driver.

Thanks
What is new in this version is written for Hades, apart from the updates of LibreELEC, Kodi and the other projects, and the code of others that it takes, which keeps its author and is named on its item above.
Several features follow ideas seen in other builds, written anew here: from CroqueMr's build, whose work started Dolby Vision on PCs, the Java menus with nothing to install, among others; from the CoreELEC builds of pannal (p3i), avdvplus and SamuriHL; from matthane's design for Blu-ray playlists; from YBLOD (dangerouslaser, big-fella); and from Sebastiii. The changelog names them item by item, and the README credits each of them.
Thanks to quietvoid for the definitions of HDR10+, to cinemaONE for measurements of a licensed player, to everyone who reported and tested, and to the LibreELEC and Kodi teams.
This is not LibreELEC and it is not official: report problems here, not to LibreELEC or Kodi. There is no warranty.
