The last release was all about the map. This one goes back to the tree charts: they can now be exported as SVG, drawn vertically with right-angled connectors, and expanded branch by branch, and the relationship chart finally draws each person only once. Image regions can now be linked to any object, and blog posts can contain images between paragraphs. Altogether, this release closes 10 feature requests! 🚀
Tree Charts
SVG export
All tree charts, including the fan chart and the connection chart in the DNA match view, can now be downloaded as an SVG file with a new button next to the chart settings. The exported file contains the photos shown on the cards, has the size of the whole chart regardless of the current zoom, and always uses the light theme, so it looks the same in any app. Closes #346.
Implemented in #1489, #1490, #1494
Vertical direction and right-angled connectors
The ancestor, descendant and hourglass charts have a new "Tree direction" setting. Vertically, generations are drawn as rows with ancestors above and descendants below, like in the relationship chart. Closes #1465.
All tree charts now draw right-angled connectors with rounded corners in place of curves. The tree charts now also show adopted, step and foster children, with dashed lines to children who are not birth children, like the relationship chart already did. Closes #1477.
Implemented in #1497, #1498, #1500
Expand branches
In the ancestor, descendant and hourglass charts, a person whose parents or children are not shown gets an arrow on the side where the branch would continue. Clicking it adds one more generation to that branch, without changing the selected person. The fan chart got the menu of children known from the ancestor chart, so you can now move down to a child directly from the fan chart.
Relationship chart
The relationship chart now draws each person once. Partners who share a family are drawn as one row, with the family markers between them, so a person with several partners no longer appears several times. Closes #800 and #710.
Children are now drawn in the order of their family, which in most trees means by birth.
Fan chart
The fan chart is now animated as well: when the new person is an ancestor or descendant of the previous one, the arcs move smoothly into their new positions. The colours for surnames and religions are now assigned by the share of the chart they cover, so large branches get the distinct colours first. Closes #906.
Implemented in #1491, #1492, #1493
Chart and person in the URL
The URL of the tree view now contains the chart and the selected person, e.g. /tree/fan/I0123. So you can bookmark or share a chart, and the browser's back button steps through the people and charts you viewed. Closes #1457.
Implemented in #1496
Image Regions
Image regions are no longer limited to people. A region can now be linked to a person, family, event, place, source or citation, e.g. a building in a photo or a citation on a scanned page. An object can also have several regions in the same image, e.g. on an album page with more than one photo of the same person. Closes #325 and #1447.
Editing regions was reworked too: selected regions can be moved and resized with their corner handles, drawing works on touch screens, and regions can be reached with the keyboard.
Implemented in #1508
Images in Blog Posts
Blog posts can now contain images between paragraphs. In the note editor, a new button inserts an existing media object as an image on a line of its own, and the image is shown with its description as caption. Images are shown in all notes that contain them, and in other Gramps clients they appear as ordinary links to the media object.
Implemented in #1485
Creating Objects
When adding a citation, you can now create a new source directly from the form, and new places and sources can be created from many more forms, like places in the new person form. The forms for new objects also have a Media section to attach existing media objects right away, and use consistent section headings. Closes #1183.
Implemented in #1516, #1517, #1518, #1519
