Only a few weeks after the big tree chart overhaul, this release continues improving the map view: you can now filter the map by time and event type, explore historical buildings from Wikidata, and switch layers in a redesigned panel, and places load much faster. On top of that come sync tokens for several devices, import and export reports, and a long list of fixes for reports. 🚀
Several of the new features rely on new endpoints in Gramps Web API v3.23, the server component included in the release images. They degrade gracefully on older backend versions.
Map View
Filter by time and event type
The map now has a filter panel, opened with a new filter button in the search bar. You can narrow down the places shown on the map
- by year, choosing a span of ±1, ±10, ±25, ±50 or ±100 years around the year selected on the slider, and
- by event type, with the event types of your tree listed as chips, most frequent first.
A place is shown if one of its events matches all active filters. Active filters appear as chips below the search bar, so you always see what's narrowing down the map. The time filter is now off by default, so all places are shown when you open the map. This replaces the cog menu and the switch in the bottom bar, which now only holds the year slider. Closes #1358 and #736.
Wikidata buildings
A new Wikidata building layer shows historical buildings from Wikidata, such as farms, manors and churches, following the data model of Domus. Zoom in on a village to see its buildings, and click one to see when it was built or demolished and who lived there. With the time filter on, only buildings that existed in the selected years are shown.
New layer switcher
The layer switcher is now a panel with preview cards for the base map and the historical map, and your own map overlays and the Wikidata layer listed below with compact switches. The chosen map style and hidden overlays are remembered per tree. On narrow screens, the panel opens as a bottom sheet.
Faster loading
Places now load significantly faster in the map view, using a new dedicated endpoint in Gramps Web API v3.23. On older backend versions, only the properties actually needed are fetched, which also reduces the response size. #1468
Other New Features
- Export and import reports: messages from exporters and importers are now shown in the UI, e.g. the parts of the tree left out of a GEDCOM 7 export, or the report of a GEDCOM import. The import confirmation dialog shows the messages of the dry run, and after an import, a panel shows the imported object counts. #1483
- There is a new sync tokens section in the user account setting – you can ignore this for now, it will become relevant after the next release of the Gramps Web Sync Addon. #1482
- Multi-tree deployments can now configure an optional link to an external account or tree management page in the settings dropdown. Empty by default. #1458
Reports
The report view got a thorough round of fixes. Reports are now generated as background tasks with a progress indicator, like exports, and every option shown in the form is sent, so the report matches what you see. Among the bugs fixed: switches and the output format dropdown not showing the actual defaults, generation failing after the login token expired, errors shown as raw JSON, and options being lost when leaving the page. The options form also got a cleaner two-column layout that works on mobile. #1467
Bug Fixes
- Prevent bugs when changing trees #1449
- Make home person widget recover from fetch error #1452
- Normalize line endings on paste in note editor #1453
