Godot 4.0 alpha 16 is a dev snapshot for the 4.0 major release. Dev snapshots are in-development builds of the engine provided for early testing and feature evaluation while the engine is still being worked on.

To make a custom build which would also be recognized as alpha16, you should define GODOT_VERSION_STATUS=alpha16
in your build environment prior to compiling.
