• When enabled, backup operations save native Elasticsearch snapshots, and restore operations load from those snapshots. Restore also automatically starts index repair operations after the snapshot is restored, so that any updates that happened after the snapshot was taken are replayed on the restored indexes. You can enable native Elasticsearch snapshots by setting GHE_ES_BACKUP_STRATEGY=snapshot in backup.config.

• Backup Utilities will be retired starting in version 3.22. There won't be Backup Utilities in 3.22. We will continue to support Backup Utilities in 3.21 and earlier versions during their respective support windows. Consider migrating to the Backup service, a managed, built-in service. It provides an alternative to Backup Utilities and does not require a separate host for backup software. For more information, see the Backup service documentation.
