This build adds to 2.6.0-test1 to test6. The headline is one Drive backup for faces, search, labels and hidden items that stays in step with your other phones and the desktop app, Compress on Drive for photos and videos already in Drive, a liquid glass look, a rebuilt details sheet, backing up from other apps' share sheets, a quicker start on big libraries, and new photos joining People and search on their own.
If anything misbehaves, please send the diagnostics so a file problem can be told apart from something else: copy them from Settings and email support@photosforproton.eu, or post on Discord or GitHub.
Fixed and improved
- The photo details sheet is rebuilt: a summary of the day, time, file name, format and where the photo is kept, shortcuts for date, place, labels and categories, and each one opening as a page inside the sheet with an inline calendar and a map.
- The multi-photo date and place editor looks like the details sheet, with Same, Shift and From filename in one switch.
- A person's page shows a month header over each run of photos, and the viewer opened from a named person's page offers Set as cover and Remove from person.
- The timeline stays where it was after opening a photo from the Collection or a person's page.
- People in this photo shows a face just taken off a person, so it can be named again at once.
- The first-launch setup is rebuilt in the app's settings style, with Not now on the permission steps.
- Turning a folder's album on also adds the photos that folder already backed up.
- A photo whose Drive copy was moved to the trash, here, on another device or on the web, is no longer uploaded again by the folder backup (#149).
- Thanks to Jesse Baber (@jessebaber), Free up checks 50 photos against Drive right before deleting them, and asks in several system dialogs when more than 2000 need one (#147).
- Face pictures on the People page no longer stay dark on big libraries, and the People page can follow the Albums tab's view or keep its own grid or list.
- The map keeps filling past photos whose location can never be read, and the world map turns more smoothly.
- The FAQ has Backup, Albums and Where to find things groups with new answers.
- The machine learning texts match the desktop app, and photo search is called Search by what a photo shows.
- A later rename of a person made on another device wins, and a person stays while photos were added to them by hand.
- Only while charging holds back face grouping too, and Compress on Drive waits for Wi-Fi unless Wi-Fi only is off.
- A finished backup keeps its count on the Sync card.
- A renamed album or device folder shows its new name right away, and a renamed folder keeps its backup choices.
- Recently deleted on Drive shows its thumbnails again when it holds more than 30 photos.
- The viewer's cloud icon follows the palette colour option in light theme.
- Deleting an unused label no longer asks about 0 photos.
- The whole library shows at once when the app opens, instead of only the newest photos while the rest is read.
- Photos you take or save while the app is open are scanned for faces and search on their own, without a restart or a pull to refresh.
- A rename or merge made while faces are grouped is no longer undone, automatic merges stay open to correction, faces of a backed-up photo stay after freeing up space, and hidden photos leave People.
- "adam" and "Adam" are one person, as in the desktop app, while "Ádám" and "Adam" stay two, and a person's photo count matches their page.
- A favourite given or taken away on the web or another device shows here within seconds.
- A photo or video copied to the phone without a date of its own shows the day it was made instead of the day it was added.
- Tapping a widget that shows Drive photos opens that photo instead of the timeline, and its photo picker no longer jumps at the first pick.
- A lossless video trim no longer loses frames at its start, a long press on the viewer's buttons no longer reads the photo's text, a folder album turned on during the first backup takes in its photos, and crop handles at the screen's edge work again.
- Remove from device shows the photo as Drive-only at once, and a renamed folder keeps its photos on screen.
- Thanks to Jesse Baber (@jessebaber), every change is now built and tested automatically, and the README explains how to check that a downloaded APK is genuine (#145).
New
- Double tap the left or right side of a video to skip 10 seconds back or forward, and hold a side to play it faster until you let go (#141)
- Liquid glass: a switch in Appearance, Theme frosts the bottom menu, page headers, the selection drawer, bottom sheets, the viewer's controls and the search field (Android 12 and newer). It is still in progress and not on every screen yet.
- One Drive backup for faces, search, labels and hidden items, kept in step with your other phones and the desktop app. Automatic backup sends changes within minutes, Back up now saves at once, and Load from Drive brings them back. Turning it on says which versions your other phones and the desktop app need.
- Backups on Drive lists each device's backup, and Clear face data asks Only on this phone or Everywhere while automatic backup is on.
- Compress on Drive: make photos and videos that are only in Drive smaller from the viewer or a selection, also in Search, an album or a place. It works newest first, and each original goes to the Drive trash once its smaller copy is in place. After a Cancel the photos already being compressed finish and the rest stay as they were.
- Back up to Drive from other apps' share sheets, and Back up now on a photo opened with Open with, such as a mail attachment (#146).
- Move to folder and folder rename work signed in too, and a photo already in Drive moves to the album of its new folder.
- More Proton Drive SDK switches: albums, the change feed and albums shared with you. All are off.
- Long press a named face in the viewer to say it isn't that person, and a named person's menu has "Remove name".
What to test
Please try the Drive backup together with the desktop app: a name, a merge, a label and a hidden photo on one side should show on the other within minutes. Try Compress on Drive on a few photos and a video, also from Search or an album, and stop a run with Cancel. Try liquid glass on and off, the new details sheet, moving a backed-up photo to another folder, a new photo joining People without a pull, a name typed in another case ("adam" for "Adam"), and a favourite set on the web. Installs over your current version and keeps your data.
