This build adds to 2.6.0-test1 to test5. The headline is a set of switches that run favourites, the trash, full quality downloads and uploads through Proton's own Drive SDK, a fix for Drive photos that kept loading in the viewer, sign-in for accounts without a Proton address, and imports from a folder with Live Photos kept as one photo.
If anything misbehaves, please send the diagnostics so a file problem can be told apart from something else: copy them from Settings and email support@photosforproton.eu, or post on Discord or GitHub.
Fixed and improved
- A Drive photo that has no thumbnail, such as some HEIC photos uploaded elsewhere, opens in the viewer instead of loading forever.
- Accounts signed up with another email address, without a Proton address, can sign in.
- "Who is this?" lists the people whose faces look most alike first again.
- A photo whose camera wrote 0,0 as its location no longer shows on the map or in places as Takoradi, Ghana, and the places already stored that way are cleared (#144).
- A date or place edit keeps the photo a favourite, with its labels, faces and search index, and the heart shows on the corrected copy at once.
- Imports compress photos and videos with the backup's options and never upload a photo Drive already holds, including one the phone backup uploaded compressed or an earlier import uploaded.
- Every imported photo gets a real capture date: its own EXIF or the video's creation time, then the date in its name, then the archive's, never 1 January 1970.
- A Live Photo import that was interrupted finishes on the next run, a Live Photo counts as one photo in the progress, history and undo, and removing hundreds of photos from an import review no longer crashes on Android 11 and older.
- Face grouping on big libraries: the names you gave or imported stay on their person, the count no longer freezes, naming or merging no longer starts a final run, and Find more photos says when a search fails or stops.
- The face card says Waiting for Wi-Fi when the photos left to scan are in Drive only and full quality is set to Wi-Fi only. Turning that setting off starts the scan.
- The backup check uses less memory and time on a very big library (#142).
- The Drive trash count under Recently deleted changes as soon as photos are moved to the trash, restored or deleted for good.
- The dark map keeps water blue and vegetation green.
- The viewer's menu no longer repeats the actions that are already buttons.
- Face models that fail to open leave a photo waiting instead of marking it as having no faces, People in this photo no longer brings back faces removed by hand, and Free up space no longer frees a backed-up photo another app edited in place.
- A failed editor save leaves the original untouched, sign-out cleanup finishes even when the app is closed during it, a vault zip is kept only once complete, cancelling a date or place edit finishes the copies already in Drive, and uninstalling offers to keep the app's data.
New
- Proton Drive SDK switches: Settings, More settings, Proton Drive SDK has one switch each for favourites and categories, the trash, full quality downloads and uploads. All are off. With one on, that action runs through Proton's own Drive SDK, and if the SDK fails the app does it the usual way.
- Set as: the viewer's menu hands a photo to the phone's wallpaper or contact photo setter.
- Other apps can pick photos from the app when it is turned on in Privacy and security. Hidden photos never leave, and strip-on-share applies.
- Import from a folder as well as from a zip, for Ente and Google Takeout exports or plain photos.
- A Live Photo in an Ente or Takeout export is imported as one photo with its video.
- The first-launch setup has a step to turn on face recognition, photo search and Copy text, each with its download size.
- A setting for what a long press in the viewer does, select text or open the menu, and Recognize text in the viewer's menu.
- Load faces saved by an earlier version: a link under the Drive card loads the face file 2.5.0 and earlier saved.
What to test
Please turn on the Proton Drive SDK switches one at a time and try each one: a favourite, moving a photo to the trash and restoring it, deleting one for good, opening a photo in full quality, and a back-up. Sign in again, especially with an account that has no Proton address. Try an import from a folder and one with Live Photos, Set as, and picking photos from another app. Installs over your current version and keeps your data.
