This test build previews the 2.4.1 release. It installs over your current version and keeps your data.

New

  • A news screen with a feedback button. Settings, under About, now has a News entry carrying short messages about the app. A button at the top takes you straight to where you can ask a question or report a bug, and a switch lets you turn news off.
  • Edit a photo's date, place and description. Open a photo's details and set the date it was taken, drop it on a place, or add a description, artist and copyright. It fixes a shot taken on the wrong clock or with no location, so it lands where it belongs.
  • Copy text out of a photo. Press and hold on a photo to select the text inside it, so a note, a sign or a receipt does not have to be typed out again.
  • Ultra HDR shown in full. A photo taken in Ultra HDR now shows with its full brightness and colour on a screen that supports it, instead of a flattened version.
  • Hide a whole device folder. A folder of photos on the device can be hidden in one step, and hiding now works the same way wherever a photo lives. The hidden area also stays out of screenshots.
  • Shift several photos' dates at once. Select a group and move them all in time together. Pick when the oldest was really taken and every other photo moves by the same amount, so the gaps between them stay. You can also set one date for the whole group.
  • Give a photo a category before it is backed up. A photo's details now offer category chips, such as screenshots, selfies and portraits, that you can set on a photo still on the device. The category is carried up when the photo is backed up.
  • See what freeing up will remove. Before freeing device space, a screen lists the photos it will delete and the room they give back, and checks with Drive that every copy is safe first, so nothing goes without you seeing it.
  • One selection bar on every screen. Selecting photos opens a single bar with everything you can do with them, the same on the timeline, in albums, in folders and in the hidden area. Each button now says what it does.
  • Updates that install without asking each time. You can let a downloaded update install on its own, instead of confirming every time an update is ready.
  • Sort and rearrange your albums. The Albums tab has a sort menu with four ways to order them: by name, by last activity, by photo count, or an order you set yourself. For your own order, press and hold an album and pick Reorder albums, then drag the covers where you want them. The order sticks until you change it. (#83)
  • Crop to a fixed shape. The editor can hold a shape while you crop: 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9, 9:16, or the photo's own shape. Pick one and the frame keeps it as you drag any corner or edge, so a 4:3 photo can be cropped smaller and still come out 4:3. Free leaves the frame unconstrained, the way it was. (#78)
  • Reopen the update highlights any time. Settings has a What's new entry that lists the versions and opens the highlights for whichever one you pick. The screen used to appear once after an update and was gone for good if you tapped past it.
  • Add your photos to an album shared with you. When someone shares an album and gives you edit rights, the add button now appears inside it, so your own photos can go in and come back out. Your copy is added to the album rather than to the owner's library, and a photo already there is skipped instead of going in twice. Saving a shared album to your own library, leaving it, and seeing who shared it all sit together on the Shared tab. (#80)

Fixed and improved

  • Hidden photos come back reliably. Revealing a photo brings it back into view, and a backed-up one lands back in the timeline in this app rather than staying hidden here while showing elsewhere. A photo with nowhere to go is no longer let out of the hidden area, and one that was neither hidden nor in the timeline is now brought back.
  • Marked hidden only once the file is gone. If removing the original from the device did not go through, the photo stays visible instead of being filed as hidden while its file is still on the phone.
  • The duplicate finder always keeps one copy. A duplicate group can no longer be cleared down to nothing, one copy of each photo is always kept. A copy is no longer counted as removed when Drive refused to delete it, and removing a cloud duplicate takes its phone copy with it.
  • The calendar shows on every phone. On a phone set to a language that writes numbers in its own script, the date calendar now appears instead of staying blank.
  • Dates, places and lengths stay accurate. A downloaded photo shows the date it was really taken, not the day it arrived, and keeps that date through an update. A photo's location and video length now show wherever they are known, and a date changed outside the app is picked up. Album dates and file details stay correct too.
  • The album filter applies as soon as you pick it. Choosing a filter for your albums takes effect straight away, instead of needing a second action.
  • Back goes where you expect. A photo opened from another app returns to that app when you go back. Inside the app, back now lands on the tab you started on instead of dropping you out.
  • A failed rename says why, in your language. If renaming a photo or album does not go through, the reason now shows in the language the rest of the app is using.
  • A shared album keeps working after a rename. Renaming an album that is shared no longer breaks its name for the people it is shared with.
  • Downloads say when they start and finish. Starting a download from search or from an album now confirms it has begun, and an album download reports whether it finished.
  • Sharing grants the permission you pick. Sharing an album now gives the exact access you chose, view-only or editing, rather than a different one.
  • The Sync now button always runs a refresh. Pressing Sync now, or pulling to refresh, while a sync was already going would quietly attach to that sync and look like it did nothing. It now always runs a real check against Drive, so a photo deleted elsewhere clears as soon as you ask, and pressing it again while one is running is folded into a single extra pass. (#82)
  • Photos deleted on another device disappear here and stay gone, even on a large library. Removing one depended on a single uninterrupted pass through the whole library reaching the end, which on a library too large to list in one go never finished, so a deletion made elsewhere never came through. Once it did disappear, it could still linger in some cases, or flash back for a moment on the next refresh. It now comes through, does not reappear, and a sync started from Settings keeps running after you leave the screen. (#82)
  • Photos in an album shared with you open at full size, and videos play. Tapping one used to leave it at preview quality, and a video never started, so a shared album was really only browsable. Both now behave the way they do in your own albums, including a video you added to that album yourself, and shared videos show their length on the grid. (#80)
  • A photo someone else adds to an album you own stays where it belongs. It could appear in the album and then vanish again, and it could also turn up in your own timeline even though it is not your photo. Which album a photo belongs to is now kept with the photo itself, so refreshing or leaving an album cannot move it. (#80)
  • Renaming a photo renames it, instead of leaving a second copy behind. A rename used to download the photo, send it back up under the new name, and then remove the original. When that last step was refused the old copy stayed, so one rename left you with two photos. It is a real rename now, so nothing is copied and nothing can be left over, and a rename that cannot go through says so instead of failing quietly.
  • A photo renamed on another device picks up its new name here. A name changed in Drive on the web or on a desktop never reached this app, and clearing storage or forcing a sync did not bring it over. Names now refresh on their own, including ones that had already drifted apart.
  • Changes made on another device arrive sooner. The app now asks Drive what has changed since it last looked, rather than only noticing during a full refresh. A rename, a deletion or a favourite made somewhere else turns up on its own, and the check is cheap enough to run on a pull to refresh.
  • A rare crash during backup and album download on Android 14 and 15. The app could stop with a background error while a backup or an album download was still running. The library that schedules that work had a fault of its own on those versions, and it is now on a version that fixes it. (#65)
  • Deleting a photo keeps the photo view open. It moves to the next photo in line instead of dropping you back to the whole album. The photo it moves to loads at full quality, can be zoomed, and a video starts, which a first attempt got wrong. Undo puts back only what that delete removed. (#79)
  • Coming back from a photo lands where you stopped. Paging deep into an album and then going back no longer means scrolling forward again to find your place. Opening a photo and going straight back leaves the grid exactly as it was. The position is set without any scrolling animation, so it is already right as the photo closes. It works on the timeline in both layouts, and in albums, device folders, search results, offline photos, a day in the calendar and the hidden album. (#79)
  • A check before deleting an album that holds photos kept nowhere else. When someone added photos to an album you own, those photos live only in that album, so deleting it would take them too. It now says so and asks a second time, with nothing touched until you confirm. (#80)
  • An album shared with you opens straight away. It used to fetch its whole contents again on every single open. What is already on the device is now kept, so the second open paints immediately, the way your own albums do. Leaving a shared album clears what it left behind, and an album you own keeps its photos.
  • Large selections and large albums hold up. Deleting a large batch of photos could quietly leave some of them still showing in the grid even though they were gone from Drive. Opening a very large album, and picking albums with everything selected, ran into the same size limit. An album whose photos cannot be read now says so instead of loading forever.
  • Automatic free-up checks with Drive first. The scheduled sweep that reclaims space could act on an old picture of what was backed up. It now refuses to run when that picture is missing, stale or dated in the future, so a device copy only goes when Drive is known to still hold it. The manual button keeps reclaiming everything, and refreshes before it starts.
  • Copied links stay out of the clipboard preview, and file sizes match everywhere. A share link you copy is marked sensitive, so the phone shows dots rather than the link itself in its paste popup. Separately, the same photo could read as two different sizes in Settings and in the photo details, because one of them counted differently. Both now agree, and they agree with what Proton Drive shows on the web.
  • A connection that fails midway shows the connection message. A drop that happened while the connection was being secured came through as a raw error instead of the plain "check your connection" wording. This shows up on a public hotspot or behind a company network.
