Forza Horizon 6 starts again on the Rosetta engine after the game's update of November 3.
Since that update the game closed within a minute of starting with Wine's Program Error dialog, in about half of the starts on the D3DMetal engine most environments use. It now calls a part of Microsoft's Concurrency Runtime that the copy built into Wine 11 got wrong when several threads add to the same list at once, and handed the game an address before the memory behind it existed. Highball now loads Microsoft's own concrt140 for this game, and Play adds that to environments that already have the game's fix. Upstream Wine fixed its copy in May, and the new Wine 11 engines below carry that fix too. Until you update, you can set it yourself in the environment's Settings, Advanced, DLL overrides, by adding concrt140=n,b, then stop the environment and start the game again.
New Wine 11 engines r30 (with D3DMetal 4, macOS 27) and r31 bring these changes.
- 32-bit games get Wine's sound, input and graphics code built with SSE2 maths instead of x87, which Rosetta runs slowly.
- athei's x87 sidecar ships with the engine, for old 32-bit games whose own code does its maths on the x87. A game's fix switches it on.
- Sign-in to the Rockstar Games Launcher works in the UTC+3 time zones (#478).
- A game that stops a threadpool I/O object while its completion is pending no longer aborts (#437, thanks jostmoritz).
- A DLL kept in a program's .local folder is loaded, as on Windows.
- A fault on one of Apple's own threads ends the program with a crash report instead of hanging it (thanks cyber-prinzesse).
- Microphones work with the short audio buffer (#350), Wine's audio clock follows real time (#444), and games follow the Mac's sound output when it changes (#460, thanks nikiomori).
- MoltenVK can cap the video memory a game sees, which a game's fix sets (#398), and gets two fixes for Detroit: Become Human (#125).
Environments stay on the engine they have. New environments for Forza Horizon 6 get r30, and other games that ask for a Wine 11 engine get r31.
Report attaches a log from your latest session. It used to go back to an older log when the newest ones had no graphics line, even one written on another engine (#645, thanks atheisticzc).
Testers with the preview key get the arm64 engine r4. Game videos play on it (ContractVille waited on a black screen), older OpenGL games like Paperback start, and a Vulkan texture case Red Dead Redemption 2 needs no longer stops it.
